Hello! Another Member Of The PTSD Group

I'm Fhawn. Ive been diagnosed with PTSD for 19yrs now. Im a victim of a violent crime. Held hostage at knfe point and perpetrator charged with attempted murder of me and my son. I work for the prison system and had many violent events. Still working for the prison system and having a hard time with my PTSD trying to figure my way around all my symptems and live life. Any advice and just to know people can relate realy helps....

Welcome Fhawn. I'm pretty new here and finding my way around the forum and finding good resources and people.
I have Trauma from many events that span over 20 years. For me the first step in starting to deal with the Trauma is
to get removed from the Traumatizing situation and to minimize triggers as much as possible. I also had massive denial
of how Traumatized I have been and how serious the effects of Trauma are and that's it's not just something that is
going to go away. This is quite a life change for me and for me it's time. Hope you reach out on this site.

Welcome to the forum, think you will find some useful info here. Lots of us can relate to your feelings, emotions etc and we are here to help and listen. You should get some help. I hope your son is okay. I know it sounds impossible, but a change of career would be fabulous. You are surrounded by violence, negativity and the lowest form of human life (guessing you are in max security).

Clidie..Yes my son is ok. He is still very angry and does not have anyting to do with his father,infact he is in the process of changing his last name.My Ex husband is now in prison for doing this same behavior to other women..He pled down a rape charge ...explain later if your interested... I worked Closed custody wich is max with no death row..they guys are doing life...I now have promoted and work with community custody offenders wich are still Max security guys down for 23 yrs for murder..I have to help find them jobs and act as a parole officer while they are in the community...if they mess up I have to arrest them and take them back to prison....Many war stories from priosn for another time lol@myself

Seaworthy: Thanks for you response...I know my work is triggering my PTSD I just went to see my doc and she has me plugged in to a new therapist..Wish me luck...Getting into a new career is hard with the economy and I just bought a house Im not ready to give everything up. Im going to try to fight this with medication and help from my Therapist....Just log my journey as I go

Best of luck. Perhaps you can learn to use your fear since you are in a situation that has ample reason for caution. I found that practicing carefully evaluating things and always re-evaluating them, going back and forth between gut feelings and evidence worked. I'm here talking to you now. There's a gestalt that can happen and you just know. It sounds like you will have to work your life out like that. You aren't dealing with kids in pre school there.

I used to relax by accepting my death as real. It's an old method, "It's a good day to die." Then I could be in situations.
