Help With Anxiety

I am having such uncontrollable anxiety. This afternoon, the small city in which I live, a former city police officer opened fire with an assault rifle on the Federal Building and the YWCA where I use to work. He fired 20-30 shots before he was taken out.

When I worked at the YWCA, I learned of how many local officers were abusive and corrupt, as is other government locally. But I witnessed so many abused women in so many ways. None of which I can speak about openly due to confidentiality. Just months after leaving my job, I was assaulted by an angry police officer. This is when ptsd began for me.

I have looked hard for the good and regain respect and some amount of trust in police officers. During this time, in this small town, at least a couple of officers have been charged with rape. Others in trouble although I cant remember at the moment. An ATF agent holding wife hostage and swat team closed neighborhood. Much more..

Anyway I have been talking myself through anxiety problems and doing fairly well, until today when the news broadcast reported this local story that occurred 5 minutes from my house. I have been using relaxation, meditation, distractions, physical labor, and anything that I can think of to ease anxiety and wean off xanax. I have done very well in the past 2-3 weeks. It has been 4 hours since news alert and I just finally took xanax.

For me, often when something like this happens it takes a couple weeks to regain equilibrium to the state I was. I dont know why stuff related to crime by police effects me so bad because my brain knows that it is a small percentage of any crimes, yet it sets my brain off.

I welcome and advice or suggestions on this. I want very much to not have to medicate through the future reports.

Sorry for your suffering. Your reaction of police killings makes sense to me, as well as the usual amount of time, from moving from an aggraved condition-after such a trigger, into a calmer condition.

Police, authority figures are authorized to protect and to kill. Symbolically, that is a mixed message; one never knows what they will do. If you had abusive parents or partners, it makes sense that police killings could be a upsetting. It is to me.

To decrease the time I spend recovering from an aggravation, the best thing that calms my mind and body down, in addition to what you described, is craniosacral therapy. Doing a couple of sessions, a few days apart really helps me.

Take good care, hope you experience peace, soon.

Thank you change. I use to get massage therapy but can no longer afford it. Being very poor right now is one of the added stressors that just lingers among others. I think this former officer committed suicide by cop from what further reports are saying. It is just so unsettling right now. Tomorrow will be better.

Your knowing you will get through this disturbing event, and your patience, is inspiring me. It sounds like you are in fine hands-your own.

Here is a cheaper version of balancing your electromagnetic field, an old hydrotherapy treatment. One to three times a day, take a hot (to tolerance) shower for 10 minutes. End with 5-10 seconds of cool-cold water. Dry off, put pjs and socks on.

Then, with all media off and lights low, go straight to your bed, and cover up with your sheets and blankets. Lay on your back with your eyes closed. Finally, gently put your attention on your breathing or heart beat, for the next 20 minutes.

In you prefer to take a bath, take a 10 minute hot bath, then rinse 10-30 seconds in cool-cold water.

During this time a physiological mindbody shift occurs; it is often calming. Sleep well.
