Horse Therapy Treatment

I was 13 when I walked through the doors of my local Rape Crisis center. I was scared and very nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. After a few months of weekly sessions with my counselor, Jeanie, she approached me with an idea. She wanted to try a type of animal therapy treatment with me. Specifically with horses!
I was so excited; I couldn’t wait to meet the horses Link Removed
We drove down the island and arrived at a farm. I remember being greeted by two excited dogs; they followed me everywhere, too cute! I was told that the horses I would be meeting were abused and neglected Link Removed. The whole purpose of this therapy was to help me and the horse regain our trusting abilities. I would have to learn to trust an animal that large and the horse would have to learn to trust me before I could ever ride them.

I met a beautiful tall horse named Catalina. She was wonderful, a free spirit that’s for sure! She was the color of dark chocolate; her mane was dark brown with blonde tips! She had visible scars from previous abusive owners, but to me she was perfect in every way. I was warned that she kicks and snips at people, but we instantly connected, I never experienced any of that with her. Soon after meeting her, I was constantly with her, feeding her, cleaning her stall, bathing her, cleaning her hooves, brushing her. She trusted me enough to help take care of her so she let me ride her!

Link RemovedThis therapy was successful for me, it was free and I didn’t have to take any medications!! Since then I’ve moved and I have seen many different types of doctors and they all want to write me a prescription for a quick fix. No pills have ever helped me like the Horse therapy did. If any of you get a chance, go to your local Rape Crisis center and talk to a consoler, ask them about this therapy option!! It worked for me.

If you need any help getting in touch with your local Rape Crisis center I'll be more than happy to help you, I'm still in touch with my old counselor JeanieLink Removed

Hi Savvybeachbum,
I am not clear - are you Jeanie, or is that your old counselor?

Your story is inspiring. I can see how horses would help, especially when you were a teenager - what young girl could resist that? I guess it must have seemed like a real treat rather than being therapy and hard work. What a refreshing idea.

Where in the world are you? I guess by your spelling of 'center' you are not in the UK. I don't know if they have any horse therapy here. I have certainly not heard of it before.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, and than you for sharing:applause:

Best wishes
Lucy x

Hi there! Sorry I wasn't clear, Jeanie was my counselor (my name is Savannah, nice to meet you!). Nope, I'm not in the UK, I'm from Eastern US :) Yep, I absolutely loved the idea of horse or any animal therapy. I know that some psychologist recommend getting a pet for those who have PTSD, so I suppose it works relatively the same way. :)

LMAO :lmao: Well no kidding! Poor kitty!! You know what I mean though, you and whatever animal would have to learn to trust each other

Yeah, I want a dog - but I can't have one because of working long hours. I just need to work out how to steal 'Murphy', my friends beautiful dog, for the odd day!!

Savvybeachbum,

I have actually heard of horse therapy and there is a place fairly close by. I am also on the East Coast of US. (Interesting )

I agree that pets are fantastic therapy! BTW I probably could fit a saddle on my dog! :lmao:

Honestly I don't know if I would be here today if it were not for my pets! The unconditional love they give is amazing. They provide companionship with no judgement and can provide safety by providing protection! I can't sy enough for pets!

Hi there :) That's wonderful that you've heard of horse therapy!! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one!!

Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to have dogs or cats where I'm living now. But back home, at my step-dad's house, I have two yellow labs (the male lab's name is Bonkers, and the female lab's name is Dixie) and they are just heaven-sent I love them very much and I just feel so much happier when I'm around them. Man, I sure do miss my dogs

Sorry it took me so long to respond to you WonderingWhy, I don't remember seeing an alert that you posted on this thread, but thank you for connecting with me!! Take care sweetie,
~Savvy
