I was 13 when I walked through the doors of my local Rape Crisis center. I was scared and very nervous, I didn’t know what to expect. After a few months of weekly sessions with my counselor, Jeanie, she approached me with an idea. She wanted to try a type of animal therapy treatment with me. Specifically with horses!
I was so excited; I couldn’t wait to meet the horses Link Removed
We drove down the island and arrived at a farm. I remember being greeted by two excited dogs; they followed me everywhere, too cute! I was told that the horses I would be meeting were abused and neglected Link Removed. The whole purpose of this therapy was to help me and the horse regain our trusting abilities. I would have to learn to trust an animal that large and the horse would have to learn to trust me before I could ever ride them.
I met a beautiful tall horse named Catalina. She was wonderful, a free spirit that’s for sure! She was the color of dark chocolate; her mane was dark brown with blonde tips! She had visible scars from previous abusive owners, but to me she was perfect in every way. I was warned that she kicks and snips at people, but we instantly connected, I never experienced any of that with her. Soon after meeting her, I was constantly with her, feeding her, cleaning her stall, bathing her, cleaning her hooves, brushing her. She trusted me enough to help take care of her so she let me ride her!
Link RemovedThis therapy was successful for me, it was free and I didn’t have to take any medications!! Since then I’ve moved and I have seen many different types of doctors and they all want to write me a prescription for a quick fix. No pills have ever helped me like the Horse therapy did. If any of you get a chance, go to your local Rape Crisis center and talk to a consoler, ask them about this therapy option!! It worked for me.
If you need any help getting in touch with your local Rape Crisis center I'll be more than happy to help you, I'm still in touch with my old counselor JeanieLink Removed
