Hi,
I have lost a major source of support in my life (a person) and I'm wondering how others cope with such a loss? Any and all suggestions or advice is welcome. I am currently looking for a new therapist (not easy), I'm about to apply to a local mental health program (just need to hand my application in), and I have support from others in my family. I realize I'm glossing over the majors (i.e. I've been suicidal again after an extended period of higher stability, comparatively), but this loss has been very significant for me (as you might imagine). I guess I just need some support, that's all. Thanks.

I've found this site to be a great source of support; I too lost some people that had been sources of support for me. It did help me to realize what great sources of support some other people were though, others I learned I could rely on. You mentioned having some people in your life you could go to for support, I think the program is a great idea, and definitely coming to this site and talking about it can help a lot.

To deal with a loss... I try to narrow my focus down to "doing the next right thing". And then keep doing the next right thing until things change.

Turn in the application and peer support here can be really assistive.

Hey Abigail7, not sure if you got the response to your last post where you said you couldn't afford membership, as guests don't get notifications, but membership itself is free :D It's only premium membership & upgrades that cost anything. Just registering itself doesn't cost anything & provides a lot more access & usability.

More on your actual question in a moment. Just hitting you up here, since as a guest you don't have a profile or way to message you privately.

I joined a 12 Step Group (Overeaters Anonymous) but there are so many 12 Step Groups, I have heard that there is even Emotions Anonymous. I'm sure if you search online, you can find one. There is also Debters Anonymous, which I joined as well.

I know of at least several other types of Anonymous Groups, so Google 12 Step Groups or something. Then if you don't find a Face to Face Meeting nearby, there are online and phone meetings. I eventually found a F2F meeting in my area, (I started one of my own at my church and another already existed 12 miles from here).

I also joined an email loop, got a Sponsor, and have made a Skype Friend who I speak with for about 45 minutes once a week. Between all of this, I feel very supported, loved, accepted and a lot less depressed!

I wish you the best with this. If you find a group, please let me know how it goes!

I guess try to find other sources of support, like this forum or other forums. Call a suicide hotline if it helps ( I do this sometimes). Look into support groups in your area (some local newpapers like the ones in my town print a directory of support groups in the area). Some hospitals also list support group meetings on their website.

I have mostly lost all sources of human support, including my therapist. I come here, have found some other online forums, and do a lot of inner work - meditation and such. I journal, and also have found many helpful written resources I use to move me along my path.

I am so glad you posted and very glad that you have family support. i think you are on the right path for you and calling a hot line would be helpful. I have found great support here on the forum and I know you will too. Hang in there you are going to be okay and it will all work out for the best.
