How To Help My Son

I'm not sure this is the right forum but hope it is.

I have a 19 year old son who appears to have severe social anxiety and depression as well. He is not diagnosed with PTSD (I am) and I don't believe that's what he has.

He tried college this year but got to a point where he couldn't even leave his dorm room to eat or for class. He would have panic attacks. He dropped out and is now back home. He has huge anxiety about leaving the house and has not been able to talk enough to even ask for a job application let alone get a job. I see it getting worse rather than better the longer he sits at home.

Here is my dilemma. He badly wants therapy but because of his age the places I've called won't let me set up the appointment. I understand the reasons for their policies but my son's anxiety is so bad he can't even talk to me on the phone. He can only text. He does talk to family members at home.

Anybody ever deal with this or have any suggestions?

Do you have a therapist? Maybe you could take your son to see him/her, tell them about it and have them call the places for the appointment? Sometimes it helps when a professional steps in. A doctor (general practicioner) might be of help also.

For now I'd just go with calling other places or those places again explaining the situation. If the person picking up the phone does not understand and you don't get too far, ask to speak to someone higher up, maybe a day later.

Good luck!

I don't know if this is feasible, but my friend used to be a receptionist at a therapist's office. She said they would sometimes have walk-ins. They wouldn't get seen that day, but they would at least be able to setup an appointment. Wondering if you could just walk in somewhere with him. I would get a referral from someone first so that it's somewhere you know would be good for him.

I don't know if that would work, but just a thought. Prime-no's suggestions are good too. Best wishes to you and your son. Glad he has you!

I have dealt with this. My son signed a form allowing me to speak with his doctors. It was very helpful for us both and he was able to lean on me when he needed the support.

I hope things get better for you both soon.
