I Hate Crutches; I Really Do

So I've sprained my ankle. No, it wasn't at the gym, while riding a horse, while hiking up a mountain, it wasn't even a fall persay. I slipped down the stairs.

Slipped!!!

I mean, it could've at least been something a little more dignified. But no, I got stupid, was paying more attention to what was on my phone then where I was putting my feet, and as I was walking down the stairs, I mistepped and down I went. My foot hit the floor at an odd angle and I heard a crunch. Next thing you know I was lying on the stairwell feeling dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, faint, hyperventilating, hot and sweaty, all the fun stuff you experience when you hyper extend a joint. I felt it swell up almost instantly. Thankfully two of my guy friends were right behind me and they were my knights in shining armour who called Public Safety and helped me get down the rest of the stairs and into a chair.

So long story short, I got taken to the ER and thankfully there weren't any fractures, so it's just a bad sprain. I got put in a spllint, given crutches, and sent on my merry way. I've had an injury like this before, in fact it was very similar circumstances, but that was back when I was in high school and I just stayed with my dad for a couple days and he took care of me. Now, not only is the injury worse than that one, but I'm in college now and must take care of myself as well as cope with the loss of the utility of one of my limbs. The crutches are almost as bad as the sprain itself. Never mind how tired I get just going across the bridge to get from my room the the dining hall to get food (and I must eat regularly otherwise I can't take my asprin) and how sore it makes my muscles, but they leave their own set of bruises and angry red sores on my sides just from rubbing. I'm not supposed to put the weight on my armpits, but I get tired so quickly it's really impossible not to. My sides stung last night as I was showering from the warm water running over the sores.

This sucks

Some of my friends and roommates have been kind enough to go shopping for me and share their ibuprofen and ice packs with me. So that's a plus, but frankly I'm gettting plain frustrated with having my mobility so limited. I've already missed three days of classes because just being on the crutches now is agonizingly painful. I'm almost out of my medication and there's no way I'll be able to make my normal walk down to the local Target pharmacy to refill on my own.

AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Hang in there! I am sorry you are stuck with crutches!! :( I was on crutches once and they were awful!!! I hope your friends can help some more. I slipped down some stairs at my house and had a huge bruise on my bum for months. Sad thing was, it wasn't the first time I had fallen down those same stairs. Felt like an idiot.

Can't speed up the healing but you can slow it down by ditching the crutches too soon. Take care of yourself and see if some friends can help. It a pride swallowing thing but do what you need to do. Elevate the foot and rest. You can do it!!

(((Ronin))), don't be a hero. Accept help from your college angels - honestly they wouldn't offer to help otherwise, especially with pain meds from the pharmacy.

Can you 'pad' your crutches with something like a sheep or lamb fleece which is gentle on your skin? Also get your assignments, notes etc by email.

No quick fix just don't push it no matter how frustrated you are.

Thinking of you.

Definitely take it easy and don't try too much too soon. My daughter (she's only 7 years old) sprained her ankle five weeks ago. She spent the first week with an ankle brace and crutches. Week two and three she was allowed to retire the crutches but still had to wear the ankle brace, no sports/activities and she had to take it easy. After three weeks of resting it and letting it heal, when she was cleared to resume normal activities the least little bit caused her ankle to swell back up and get painful. Because it was not fully healed and was getting re-injured they put her in a cast. She has had that cast on for two weeks and has at least two more weeks before it is removed.

Follow dr's orders and do what you have to do in order to allow your ankle enough time to heal. If it doesn't, or you re-injure it, the alternative treatments are no fun.

I am right there with ya. Sprained my ankle a week or so ago and have been hobbling around on crutches ever since. I hate them! I can't even begin to tell you what a pain in the a** they are. Try taking three dogs out for a walk or even out for a potty break. And then add a foot of snow...

Boo for crutches!!

Maybe I missed it, but where's the PTSD part of this post that we're supposed to address?

where's the PTSD part of this post that we're supposed to address?

It seems that perhaps the area that this thread was posted in was an error which no one else has noticed. If you find something like this again SOL please report the main post and comment as you have as it more helpful in having it brought to staff's attention.

Thank you.

I'm so sorry Ronin! :(

I was on crutches for awhile (they are stashed in my closet!) and couldn't wait to use a cane, so much easier to maneuver around the house and in and out of the car!

I hope you heal quickly. Sending healing thoughts.
Peace,
Rain

I agree with KP and catjudo - ask for help from your friends and do as little as you can.

Some time ago I managed to sprain my ankle having a cup of tea so I'm with you on the wishing for a more dignified reason. I wonder what would be suitable... maybe rescuing someone or at least winning a major sporting event for your country.

In addition, I didn't know the crutches were adjustable so I wasn't only struggling to get as far as the bathroom with them, I had to bend almost double to do it. Then someone who'd come to see me witnessed this sorry performance and asked why I didn't just make them longer.

BUT the one thing I did really well, without embarrassing myself any more, was lying on the sofa for a week with my leg slightly raised. I recommend it!

Also, when I did start venturing out with the crutches no-one made me pay bus fare, wait my turn in a queue or pack my own bag at the supermarket. I quite missed that when I was better.

Hope you can make peace with your situation and spend lots of time lying down.

Hashi

I'd rather break my dominant arm twice in a row than be on crutches, so I feel for ya. Take it really easy so you can heal up.

Thank you guys. It means a lot. I feel like I'm getting a little better each day, but it is a slow process. I just have to put my game face on. I totally agree with you though a3a2, having my right arm in a cast for several months was not as bad as being on crutches for a week.

Hashi, I definately know what you mean. I'll admit it does make me feel warm and fuzzy inside when people run over to open the door for me and offer to help me with things all the time.

I've gotten a little more adept at using the crutches, though they're still obnoxious. One thing is for sure, I'll definately have some strong elbows by the time this whole ordeal is over.

And sorry for not posting in the correct forum, "blonde moment" is the best defense I can offer :giggle:

Moral of the story; put your phone away before you walk down the stairs.
