Inside Out, The Movie; Wow, What Did You Think?

For me the distinction between FEAR and PANIC is really key to understanding how to deal with traumatized people. Because what soothes FEAR (retreating and getting small) can often make PANIC worse. I have a cousin who is a pediatric anesthesiologist who LOVED this distinction because it mapped so neatly onto the two kinds of patient responses to anesthesia. Some kids have FEAR which turns to RAGE and they FIGHT and it can take several adults to hold them down to get put under. Others can be "talked down" soothed... they are in PANIC and so when they feel connected again it abates...

SEEKING as an emotion makes intuitive sense to me, curiosity being a dominant theme in my life. PLAY I thought was bullshit at first - but really once you get it it really helps make sense of a lot of things - a sense of justice for one. And PLAY facilitates attachments to those not your family...

I had a point... but now its gone...

Good movie.

But I miss the days when kids movies were made just for kids and didn't have to cater to people of all ages. Kind of like why I enjoy watching older kids movies. They didn't have to be all "grown up" too.

This is kind of confusing. I kind of have a "thing" about doctors/medical stuff. I think of that as "Fear". When they start getting physical it turns into "Panic" and then I fight. (Because on some level I feel like I have to save my own life.) That might LOOK like "Rage", but it's really the extreme end of Fear. At least I think it is.

"Play" is an emotion? (I thought it was just a "thing".)

Thank you @BlueOrange well that might explain how one can never entirely even prepare for an expected death.

Totally agree re: fear vs panic feelings @Eleanor .

Was hatred in there? I don't get that. Maybe that's something like jealousy or envy + fear? Or revenge/ retribution>

Ya, father wasn't angry.

Absolutely love+++ your explanation @Leisel . I've heard we are all motivated by about 5-10 top things/ values, eg love, honesty, loyalty, curiosity, etc.

@scout86 , I'm not sure if tht experience is any different than a terrified cornered dog fear-biting? Maybe the intent is to get away?

Lots of the old kids' movies were sad though, Bambi- mother dies, etc. They had sad endings or were kind of gross. Christmas stories too/ fairy tales- Humpty Dumpty- he's in pieces, Frosty the Snowman melts, The Grinch well grows a bigger heart but.., Little RedRiding Hood etc. Even 101 dalmations had Cruella!!

One of my favorite cartoons, growing up, was Rocky and Bullwinkle. Still fun to watch today. They had humor on an amazing number of levels. Actually, a lot of children's literature has what you might call "adult themes". Ever read Black Beauty? I probably learned most of what little I learned about "feelings" from reading books like that.

Was hatred in there?

No, just joy, anger, fear, sadness, & disgust.

I look at those above like primary colors. The primary colors which are the only ones not mixed; blue, red & yellow. All of the remaining colors are a mix of those colors (excluding black & white as they arent colors rather white absent of all colors and black a combination of all; though when you mix all colors you get brown but whatever). I think those may be "primary emotions" and the remainder is a mix of those adding intensity.

I find hatred as being disgust + i think anger & + fear & dialing intensity to its highest. Judgement as well but i dont see judgement as an emotion, its a choice...a thing. Hatred can also been seen as a thing too and not an emotion. As i dont really feel hatred, i do hatred. An action. I activitey hate. (I mean i dont, im just talking).

I dont know though, just some thoughts. Im def not an expert but seeing those emotions on the movie as like primary colors and the remainder a mix of them is easier for me; as an artist I "get" colors.

Oh @scout86 , he was a little early for me, but wasn't he the flying squirell?  :) I lovvvved Black Beauty. The horse, at least, is all I recall. Also Lassie.

I think my dog was my shrink. Seriously. Definitely. And My Protector.

Yes @lostforgottensoul . But do you think it's more complex?

I meant was that one of the 7 @Eleanor said? I have to check back. This all confuses me. I think it may be something @lostforgottensoul that is complex in it's simplicity, possibly more to it than it appears? Do you think? (Not the movie, emotions). Why have too many? Why not? Where does sensitivity come from?

But do you think it's more complex?

Hatred or all emotions?

I think both are complex. I didnt read the link that was posted yet but emotions are most certianly complex, its just that most that arent joy/happiness, fear, anger, & disgust are a mixture of those with intensity added at different levels.

I dont know, as an artist, its just easier for me to understand if i put it in the form of colors; primary & the remainder being a mixture of them. Remember that white & black arent colors but add different shades. So think of black & white as insensity; black being higher and white lower. Mix red & blue and you have purple. Add lower insensity = white and you have lavender. Does that make sense?

You can add so much black (so much insensity) that the color is almost black (at its most insense like when fire came out of anger's head. Add that with fear (people fear what they dont understand) and even some disgust and you have what can look like hate.

Its just easier for me to see them that way. It wont be for some.

No I like it.

No, not anger or hatred. For me that's rare, except for towards myself, which I need to fix/ replace, somehow.

I think it's something good though..to think in color not bl-&-white (figuratively speaking, if that makes sense?) To see the beauty everywhere. I think the movie meant that, that it's good we are created the way we are, & not our fault, or impossible to fix, to get back 'on line'.
