OK - all those tat people out there (you know who you are - come on out ) - I am looking for suggestions for a new tat. I'm no newbie - this will be my 4th one - but I'm specifically looking for some type of "healing" or "new beginning" symbol or meaning.

Any suggestions?

OK, two suggestions. The 1st one is a Lotus flower. It is very symbolic in Asian and Indian cultures. It grows from the deep, muddy, murky waters and slowly grows upward toward the light and then blooms when it reaches the top. Check out some pics.

Second, (very girly here) a butterfly. It is a symbol of transformation or change, love and joy.

If either are too girly by themselves, just add some tribal art to them:smile: Good luck!

Hi SBF,

Well, I think tattoos are highly personal artwork to express a person's own unique journey.

I have 3, myself (so far):

- one is somewhat silly (my first, gotten, as is often the case, after too many margaritas) and is of a daisy with a bumble bee (both have personal significance, but I may get it covered by a bigger, brighter tattoo later).

- one is of a dove coming down through sun-slanted clouds carrying a banner with the word, "Mukti" on it. Mukti which is Sanskrit for liberation, forgiveness, release, salvation and the like.

- the last is a brilliantly done tree of life symbol, about a 4"x4" circle, to indicate the unity and oneness of all life.

My next one will be the woman in the maze (similar to my Avatar) which represents the journey of life that, if done well, ends with the person looking within for their answers and direction in life.

Don't know if that gives you ideas....I have a friend who has them all over and what she does is just let the idea of her next tat percolate until it just "comes to her"....it seems to work. When I decide I want one it's hard to wait, but I'm finding that that method works better for me, too: letting the vision come to me from within. It also helps that the artist I go to is so very talented that it can take 2-3 months to get in!

I'd love to hear what you decide!

I am a girl of many tattoos!

I think a phoenix can represent new beginnings quite well (I have one). I love Dylan's suggestion about the tree of life--I've toyed with that idea for many years. Something floral can be good, to represent growth. I've always wanted to get some soft cherry blossoms, they are so vibrant but also delicate.

Something circular might demonstrate cycling from hardship to growth; the wheel of life, for example. It may help to go through a bunch of art books to see what images look calming to you, to get an idea of elements that seem warm and healing.

One symbol you might really like is the chiron. If you google it, you can see examples of it. It's an astrological symbol of healing wounds.

I personally don't like tattoos but if I ever had one to mean something I would use my company logo

www.njmandco.com.au

The symbol is a combination of the lotus flower, a ballerina (girl dancing) and water. I see the ballerina as dancing on water or the lotus flower floating on water.

Thank you everyone for your replies - It definately helps me get a starting place. I already have butterflies - but will start looking at some of the other ideas (I had no idea about the lotus flower) - and try to make it my own.
