I think our tablets are 5mg. When I take it I only use 1/4th of the pill. If I take the whole thing I will wake up groggy and angry and miserable. They always work for normal can't-fall-asleep nights, but if something else is going on, worry over something, whatever; basically if something else is going to keep me awake 2 or more hours after I take it the effect passes and it's useless.

I used them to sort of reset my sleep after my kid started sleeping all night, but I was still laying awake, waiting, for months after. After a few weeks I didn't have to take them anymore. I've only needed to take it 3 or 4 times since then. Only once this year.

Sometimes. I know this is an old thread and stuff but I was thinking about this the other day. If I don't take melatonin (pill form), I can't sleep at all. Take it every night about an hour before bed. Doesn't work if I'm really triggered but otherwise, I'm up all night. I still wake up multiple times even with taking it but it's not so bad to where I can't get back to sleep.

I take something else to help me stay asleep, but Melatonin does work to get me to fall asleep.

My psychiatrist believes that low doses are more effective, so I cut a 2 mg pill into fourths. I do have less nightmares than when I was taking a larger dose.

Melatonin left me feeling very groggy in the morning, even on very small doses and when taken earlier in the evening.

I freak out totally with the idea of taking normal sleep meds and get very hypervigilent, Melatonin is the one that doesn't set me off psychologically and so its the most useful, It doesn;t help much but can be useful.

I used to take a 5 mg dose, but it didn't always work. About the only thing it DID do on a regular basis was make the nightmares worse...definitely don't need that! So I quit taking Melatonin and started rotating through a set of other methods to sleep, not all of them healthy. Alcohol seems to be the most consistent, but again, doesn't always work and can't use it all the time for obvious reasons.
