orders in the army where acting out straight away and to the best. battalion HQ if and order or the CO wanted something done it would be passed down the chain straight and he or any ranking soldier things would be done there and then, occaisionally there might be a stall but there would be a good reason behind it. every soldier regardless of rank had the correct amount of discipine.
ive been out of the army for more than a decade and yet it still narks me the civilian laid back approach. if you want something its probably days or weeks until you get it. you someone to do something and usually a reply like thats no my job even the most of petty things which s/he could easily do. i really narked when i have an appointment with me psychiatrist, the ive been with now for 6 years never missed one appointment, always turn up early. then id usually have to wait because some civvy with some bullshit excuse is late and i have to wait even longer. no wonder this countries going to pot, i say get rid of the goverment and bring in the military they couldnt f*ck the nation anymore than the goverment can.

Years and years ago, when I was a kid in the 60s, all the older grown-ups used to say 'what we need is another war'.
Of course they, and my parents generation, had been through it. Had learned to crack on with stuff, had faced a real threat.
My dad was one of the first Royal Engineers in to Nagasaki, 19 years old.
I wouldn't wish the nastiness of war on anyone (well, maybe a couple of arseholes), but, increasingly, I can see what those grown-ups of my childhood meant.
Yes, I'm turning into me dad, and most of the population look soft, lazy and obsessed with 'stuff'.

My step daughter just joined two weeks ago, she is at boot camp and is going to be an MP. She wants to be a dog handler and close protection. She out shot all the guys and also out did them on push ups etc. Very fit, yet slim build.

She used to always leave everything to the last minute or be late by a minute or two. I told her that when she marched out of boot camp she would despise the civilian world for the laid back approach.

On another note, my wife leaves her phone bill and her registration until the day before to pay them, no reason, she just does. It grates on me as what if something happened.

Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
