Need input on handout about service dogs

We do what we can. It’s exhausting, and it’s frustrating that managing our disability involves educating the public. I totally get that this is wearing you down.

For me? Sometimes when I just don’t have any more “Please stop”s in me? I respet to “Please just stop”, and then turn around and walk away. Sometimes that’s all I can handle.

We have a dog that is a rescue and has PTSD himself. You would be amazed how many times we get asked "Can I pat your dog?" and then when we say no - he bites they want to argue about how well they know dogs and how he won't bite them etc etc. Then when you say - really? cos he's bitten us so... (and I can show them the scars on my hand) they still want to argue the point.

We took him to the vet with a muzzle on and the vet insisted that he knew dogs and the dog was fine and he would take the muzzle off. The next words out of his mouth were "Your dog just bit me!"

I can understand why you are getting tired of explaining. I love the idea of a letter from your dog. Perhaps it could even make the point that "While you need not to distract me, you should feel free to interact with my handler, @Justmehere, as much as you like."

Apologies that I'm so late to this thread, but I have seen service dogs wearing outfits that say in big letters "I AM AT WORK. DO NOT PET ME!" Might that help?
