Welcome Home Vincent. Art is therapy, especially writing, used by many deliberately or by default. There are many vet groups and therapist that use it.

We even have a few threads already on here you can find with the search function. People use all sorts of techniques. I would write to purge myself of hate or play piano to stop thinking and just focus on notes/music. It got me through some very dark times.
Anyway, we call progress "baby steps" because there is no cure and no big gains but they add up at time. But never, never think the beast has forgot you. That is when it will take you down. You got to know your triggers, avoid, distract and have a closet full of learned and well develop coping skills. Group therapy helps you find the camaraderie we miss from the military and share with others that deal with what you deal with. Retreats and therapy programs help you try different coping techniques.
Spock I need to pick my violin back up, I use to play for many years when I was younger.
Side note: Does anyone else have issues particularly with their significant other when it comes to them complaining? I hear people complain about what seems to me as the most trivial issues. The hard part is I tend to compare everything to survival and life/death. So when people complain about day to day life, I tend to get angry. It makes it hard with my current girlfriend that is trying to learn to adapt to my symptoms and life.
Vincent, Ive been single for quite some time now. Partly cos I'm a piece of work to live with. Partly because I heard my happy-go-lucky ex-bf get upset about things I thought too minor to notice.
If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have made more of an effort. Can't blame people for not having the same experiences or insight into PTSD.
But that's the common sense reasoning. Anger or impatience comes only too easy.
