Welcome! This forum has done wonders for me. If nothing else it's a place you don't have to hide everything and carry on. I also feel normal when I'm here.

We are all pretty much on the same journey although our experiences and traumas differ.

Nice to Meet you Officer! :)

I tell you one thing @pd117 Your job really does have it's con's... But you are aware of them. Is there no support within your work community, where you can get out the daily events from your mind. Something to remind you that you are doing your job because you care. If you didn't care, then you wouldn't be in this situation, I believe.

What I reckon PD is figure out how to rid yourself of these flashbacks and soldier on! You sound like a fine damn cop to me and I believe if you get through this, you will be better again... This is only what I think.

Hi pd117,

Welcome to the forum!

Bottling it up is pretty normal as many people just tend to push it aside and get on with the business of their life. However, when things can no longer be pushed aside, they can be dealt with and life does settle down again. Finding a good therapist that can assist you with processing and managing your symptoms will really help you with reclaiming yourself and your life.

Take care.

Debbie

Of course you are suffering. I cannot imagine what you have seen, all in a days work. You are extremely brave to post and join here and I welcome you. I would think many of your co-workers in law enforcement would also suffer from ptsd, but I also think it might be unpopular to admit. This is why I want to really acknowledge your guts and desire to seek help, coming forward. Good for you!

I can stand behind this fact for who I am in a way. But okay, it did my research on my problems and there is a group of people where they say " They are swimming in PTSD" & " It's the elephant in the T****-C******y living room ". And I am not talking about the army for those who have Combat-PTSD. I am living in Belgium, but if I was born with my life-problem in Brazil, I could be bind behind a car and see some streets around the block and hoping I could survive. At the moment Police is educated (or they are trying to educate them) for who I am, and I am living in a kind of social war with micro-aggression that eats me. Now telling openly I have PTSD or C-PTSD or being fearful (and maybe they can see that), can be fun for the other. Telling you have PTSD or some kind of problems or who I am can turned and used against me. Lara.

You are fighting is the point! You can't succumb to your fears or you will have lost @LaraGeel

@LaraGeel You are courages, the worst is that you die believing in yourself :) The best is you succeed :D The stronger you get, the least friends you have! Albeit the most respect you gain ;)

Thanks everyone for the nice words. Today is my first day back since I was diagnosed over a month ago. It is stressful, but I need to keep trying. Luckily I have a desk job, so I can take it day to day. The other officers have been supportive and welcoming. I think the lexipro is working, but I am not sure. I am smiling more, but it is difficult. Again, thank you! It was much appreciated.

I know everyone says this about everything but it takes time. My most recent trigger was the beginning of November and it took till January/February for me to feel like myself again
