Friends,

My therapist told me this week that after the conversations that we've had she thinks I also have "Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder". It is sort of like OCD, but not quite the same thing. I don't really know much about it other than what I have read on the internet. I was just curious if anyone else suffers from it? I had never heard of it before but she says that it is working in conjunction with my PTSD to screw with my head. I'll have to get a handle on both in order to get better.

Since I haven't heard of it before, I was wondering if it was a new diagnosis with the newest version of the DSM of it has always been there. I got a "C" in Psychology in college and so I'm not really up on all of the terminology and what not.

It does. Thank you.

And congrats on the grades. I was a history major and psych just wasn't my thing. Wish I had payed more attention to it.

Actually I was a biology and chemistry major but I had to take a year of social science electives. Although psychology has been helpful when dealing with mental health professionals...:-)

I was diagnosed with this (and OCD) today, and my P put me on Zoloft. @Ed Norton Does this mean that it will help for the compulsions but not the intrusive thoughts/rumination?

I have OCPD and the easiest way I can explain it is if you have it you already know what it is, you just didn't know that everyone else didn't feel that way. For example with me some small things my towels have to be folded a certain way, why? I have no idea. What will happen if they aren't? Nothing. Besides drive me insane! Lol my dishwasher has to be loaded a certain way ect. Big things, I plan out vacations so much that I don't enjoy a minute of them, it sucks, I thought that's how everyone did it! Grocery shopping is a major planning event for me, in general I have lots of lists! A person with OCPD does things a certain way because we have to for our own reasons not because we are compelled to because we think something bad may happen or there will be a consequence like someone with OCD does. Thanks to my phycologist I know understand that I do these things and why, haven't made much headway on controlling it yet but at least I recognize I do it! Good luck to you!
