those were my Boot camp memories.

I could find a lot more. Point being they still have my mind and heart even now. Free rent as they say. We actually belived we were bullet proof and so good we couldnt be hurt. Yeah..... that bad.

I quoted you reddevil, then screwed up the post. was a comment on fighting and getting old.

This may be way off course in this thread, but how many of us beat up old Nam Vets wanted to get up out of our recliners and go down to the recruiters and raise our right hand again when they saw those towers fall?

On getting old....my body is 80 and my mind is still 18. And that sucks big time.
On the whole 9-11 thing... I felt the same way when my cousin was at the bombing in Beruit. He came out ok but a lot of Marines didnt. I knew in my heart I was going to go into the Marines then. The military should test or exempt people who have had PTSD before going into the military. Hell...even then they dont care. The US Army recently admitted that the had 20k soldiers during the "surge" that were suffering from PTSD on meds for it and still on active combat patrols.
Same guys get home and explode and we then jail them. And everyone shakes thier heads and wonders about the guys in the military not being the same as the older generations.
I feel like I fell through the cracks. I am not of the current batch of vets and I feel like I dont belong. Like I am depriving them of a chance to get thier lives running smoother. God knows I cant fix mine.

i did not want to fight. Now on Daddy Bush's watch he had me all stirred up and ready to ride. But not on Lil Georgie's. I think I reached the point of disillution. I believe my response was as long as they don't come marching up my driveway I just don't give a f*ck anymore. We went to war for the Bush Clan's Oil concerns. And we got shit to show but another bunch of our young getting killed and crippled. I was more angry over the f*ckers with their yellow ribbons and flags supporting the troops. When in esscence all they were doing is supporting China who produced the goddamn things.

I HATE THE f*ckING GOVERNMENT who sent you guys into harm's way. Not any different than when we went to Nam. Save maybe they try to pretend they support you with welcome homes and parades and such. But while you are over there fighting America could have gave two shits and their self-centered lives went on.

At least we have a whole other generation of warriors who will ask the same question you did Sarge when they take our place. my two . . .

i have no idea what they make today. but i think back i was E4 over 3 and with hostile fire or combat pay whatever they called it, i earned $89 a month. Given today's inflation I bet pay matches that in the war zone. Hell guys scrimped and saved every damn penny and had almost enough to get a new car. BFD. Still someone has to defend this nation of crybabies.

Excellent responses, Gentlemen, thank you. That question came up in one of my Vet Center group meetings and the answers were a swirl of everything from the screw that, and hell yeah. I'm crazy enough to go. If they put me in a AC-130, on a scope and I don't have to lug around those heavy dash 1s and 5s, hell yes I'd go. Yeah, I know, I'm nuts. Really.

The $$$ is the problem here in Australia.
Australia has been know as one of the best paid for active duty. And that is the alluring trap that gets the young fellows.

It was never about the money for me as I was senior in rank. I went to New Guinea while the others went to East Timor. I got about $40 a day while the soldiers in East Timor got their wage tax free and what we call danger money. They used to call it the Dili Dash For Cash.
The same for Iraq. The first guys in lived permanently in the Red Zone at the old Aussie Embassy.
Then they moved into the Green Zone, but nowhere was safe there from rockets or mortars.

Sorry for stealing this thread, but a lot of our soldiers are lured overseas because of the promise of extra money and they are not forewarned about PTSD. Yeah, they are told they might die, but its just a big video game to them.

A favorite quote by the Nazi Goering always comes to mind:

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."--Goering at the Nuremberg Trials

In my opinion what he said is still a tactic government uses to this day . . . just fill in your countries of choice!
