I am a bit of a socialist yes. I am in the party and I celebrate mayday. But I'm not planning on taking over the world or anything. And yes, I know its shit and I know it doesn't work... But I get find anything better.

I was raised on the generation of Americans who were taught to hide under our school desks if the USSR nuked us(like the desk would have helped?!) So the red scare was what we all feared.

I remember the days of Uncle Ronnie all too well AND his Imp GB Snr. Alexander Haige, wow, the shit he said. And hiding under desks and the mandatory watching of the movie "The Day After". Basically telling us all, we're going to get clobbered and half of us will die, the other half will have all their hair fall out, but hey....we can take it.

In 87 we mobilized the entire 2nd fleet. I was in New London/ Grotten. Biggest Submarine base in the world. Every single submarine in the fleet took off. Even the little joke training sub. We were at our mooring stations with fire axes, waiting. No time to cast off. Just chop and run when we got the word. 4 days of extreme stress and everyone wondering what the hell was going on. DefCon something or another.....I don't remember if the numbers go up or down any more.

Turns out...... I saw on Discovery Channel some years later, that in 87 SAC HQ computers started running a simulation program without anybody knowing about it........ Simulating Russians gassing up their missiles.
Holy shit. We came close to blowing up the whole show. Lucky for that red phone I think.

I don't miss the Red Scare days at all........ But now we have a different scare, spun in the same old way. This really isn't anything new. People just forgot during the 10 year interlude. Although our interlude was Alan's hell. Sorry for that.

Thanks Alan! You did manage to answer a LOT of my questions. I am sorry to have dragged you into a bad place that was not my intent at all. I can tell you about puppet dictators who make loads of money on making and selling drugs. Or drug kindpins who have 600 plus personal armies armed with all the modern toys including helo's with mg's and rockets.
I can not imagine the helplessness you faced. I do imagine a war on my streets. And I know the best spots to defend as well. I doubt I will ever need to use them but in my mind I needed to know. It must be very shocking to see people killed for no real reason and then when the guns are put down they are not really and the hatred is still there. I could not live without exacting something from the ones who practiced thier evil.
I was good friends with a Check for about 3 years ...he just got a bit to weird even for me....but he came to the US when the curtin was still up and his hate was very active even after so many years. I guess its like that a lot of places.
America has ne good thing going for it and that is we are all from somewhere else. So as much as you might not like one people, the US is filled with people from all over so there are still plenty to get along with. We practice tolorance and it kinda works. We still have race issues and real problems with corruption as well.
I will admit I am very glad I didnt have to do what you did. Trained army or not, what you did I think was the hardest not only to survive but to also witness. I am sorry it happened to you and your family and friends. I wish it had never happened, but on the other hand you did the right thing and tried to defend yourself and your family and that I am sure was more than most did.

comrades, it was good to kind of get it all out. Haha, reading it now, you can see where it started to get a bit upsetting as my spelling and grammar are all over the place. Its all wierd. The whole shebang for us was like hell on earth, then it instantly stopped, we are on a current ceasefire so its not stopped stopped as it were... The VRS have blown president Alija's grave up twice since the end.
But this month the BBI centar shopping mall won european shopping centre of the year 2011. The Europa hotel in town has been voted the best hotel bar of 2010. How wierd is it? And kids are starting to learn the new anthem not the BiH one from when we were fledglings.
So its wierd. The good thing is in places, not everywhere, but in some small places, you can even see these kids playing together. I just want to think my kids when we go over will have a future there. Whatever language it is, that they are welcomed, safe and accepted. And now you can can get a happy meal in Sara, so all is well.
As for you guys, well its a whole different ball game. If somebody is shooting down your street you get motivated. Going to Afghanistan, NI, SR Vietnam, shit hole nowhere in the far east, sat on a floating target in the atlantic... That takes some bollocks. Thats stuff that doesn't effect you (I'm not counting terrorist bombs or anything here), and yet you all went off to do the right thing. That takes some doing comrades. Thats cast iron belief in your comrades and that you are doing the right thing. Anyway, this is supposed to be a music thread. So without further procrastination I give you...

At the entrance to our sprawling no-fun complex at BL was the usual collection of stalls selling pirate CDs etc.
In summer, one of these stalls was run by a very fit blond lass who wore predictably short skirts.
One lunchtime in the canteen, I was sat next to a Dutch bloke I knew.
'Oi, Peter', I said, 'you're a bit quiet?'
'Well, you know that very fit girl has the CD stall?'
'Yep'
'Well, this morning I was there. It is a warm day, and I noticed she had the ice-cream freezer at the back of the stall.
'Yep?'
'So I asked for the ice-cream. And she bends right over into the freezer to get one out.....'
