This is true,
When you hit a trigger,
  • the parasympathetic nervous system shuts down, digestion slows or stops for example.
  • the sympathetic nervous system turns on, your eyes dilate and blood flows to your extremities.
  • We normally run on parasympathetic, but dangers or triggers switch automatically to sympathetic.
  • Both systems are part of our Peripheral Nervous System, and are automatic.
The picture of the human is correct, just not complete. But you get the idea.

One of the problems with us PTSD folks is that when "aroused for danger", the hormone cortisol is released.
Us types that remain hyper vigilant use more cortisol than normal. This can lead to numerous health problems. Its better to learn to control emotions if you can. I am personally still working on it. I have a tendency to jump out the car ready for action when someone f*cks me over with a look, touch, whatever...

We have to learn to be calm, I know personally I always pick the corner facing the door in a restaurant, if possible. Sounds hyper vigilant, but I am more calm during the meal.
