I was coordinating a community swap at a park, inviting people walking along the street to check out the "free tag sale". I called over a young man and woman. She was so excited, and grabbed a pair of boots for herself and a couple items for friends. They said they were new in town and asked the way to Wal-Mart. They were headed in the wrong direction for walking. He said they would walk in the woods along the highway.
A friend had loaned me a car for the day, so I offered them a ride. He didn't want to ride with me, but she did. They both got in in the end. I drove them to all the entrances to the footpaths and multi-use trails around town as well as some cool places to eat, hang out, etc. She shared that she had moved here, into a recovery house. She was so happy to be in such friendly community. She was determined to get her life on a track that felt better to her. She said that where she came from, no one would ever just give her a ride to a store. It was a good connection.
