ummm.... there's a serious trend here. I might have been a Beverly Clearly fan
You know, I think you might be right! :woot:

Did you know that Beverly Clearly has a two-volume memoir? Or actually, two separate memoirs, I think. I haven't read them yet, but they are on my list; both come highly recommended by a trustworthy bookworm friend :bookworm: : Dead Link Removedand Dead Link Removed. I believe they are above the level of, say, Ralph S. Mouse, but not too difficult either. I'm just linking to the U.S. Amazon site.

I love Ramona but I always had a soft spot for the Mouse and the Motorcycle, and if I remember correctly, the little helmet made from a walnut shell! :)

The Velveteen Rabbit is a beautiful book... I mean, yes, there are a variety of beautifully illustrated editions, but the story itself is so sweet. I had forgotten about it.. Funny that it is the one picture book mentioned by more than one person here... I think it is attractive to those who wish for comfort. The beloved "old" stuffed bunny becoming real, via the true love of a child.

I love children's literature. One of my favorites is "The Secret Garden". Anything by Ronald Dahl, Cornelia Funke, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (of course)
Charlottes Web, the Narnia Cronicles ( Start with "The Magician's Nephew") The Wizard of Oz series of books. "The Five Little Peppers" books. "The Borrowers" books
Mary Poppins is a series of books. "Storybound" & "Stories End" by Marissa Burt
Kathryn Littlewood's "Bliss" & "A Dash of Magic" She has others but I haven't read them yet.
Chris Colfer "Land of Stories"
The Magic Tree House books are fun

Many of these books can be found online for free. Do a search on free children's literature. There might be some dead ends but you will find something.
Sorry if I went on and on, it was like giving a shout out to only a few old friends. There is always a new friend to be found in a children's book.

Can relate to this v much! Had a period of years where I couldn't really read fiction at all.

The series that got me back into reading was a kids series, though a relatively new one, the "His Dark Materials" Trilogy by Philip Pullman

All of the Oz series by L Frank Baum, the little house series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Narnia by CS Lewis, the Hobbit series by Tolkien.

@Friday, @katphish and @jaccat mentioned most of my favorites but since you like sci-fi you could also include:

anything by Madeline L'Engle starting with A Wrinkle in Time, that is the beginning of a series,

Robert Heinlein starting with A Stranger in a Strange Land,

The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy and the rest of that series,

the Anne of Green Gables series (not sci-fi).

Graeme Base has amazing children's picture books such as Animailia and The Water Hole his books are not simply picture books though

HeinLein is not children's but I read it in 5th grade so I consider it a kids book. Other more grown up books recommended include
anything by Robert Ludlum (but nothing written after his death which will have a co-author on it)

John Grisham all his books

James Patterson's Women's Murder Club if you like cop/crime mysteries

My favorite book as a child was Danny, Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. I didn't have a great relationship with my father and that book is about a great relationship between a young boy and his dad. I read it once a year and it gives me a little bit more hope each time.

I have a little paperback book of children's fairy tales that I like to read / re-read from time to time. Most of the others like Narnia etc. have already been mentioned, but I hope you find something that you will enjoy.

peace,
Lionheart
