then there's Seroquel XR, extended release that doesnt give you any "drugged up"- feeling once you give it a lttle tume to get used it.
It will do the 'drugged up' thing, though, at higher doses.

They are used for two totally different things - which is why you're right to point out the differences, @lostforgottensoul. Quietapine (generic seroquel immediate release) is most commonly prescribed for sleep. It avoids the vivid dreaming problem that people can have with trazadone, it's not a benzo, and it doesn't mess with your blood pressure like Prazosin. It's downside is that it's very effective, and some people have too much of a drug hangover from it.

Seroquel XR is used for everything from anxiety management up through depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia. Very wide dosing range. At lower doses, it's generally very tolerable. At higher doses, people will appear 'drugged', and often need an additional medication to counteract this effect during the hours they need to function in the daytime.

(just explaining more of the difference between them, in the interest of being helpful)

Yes! The first half of that Id say this is exactly why XR should work better for daytime mood stabilzer. And the second half is why I asked what MG you're on @trying2movefwd as it may be too high. 25mg is the lowest for immediate release quetiapine and 50mg is the lowest for seroquel XR.

Personally I started at 50 XR and each month titrated up as I can feel drugged up easy, have physical symptoms that meds make worse, and need to have at least half a brain to work. This worked very well for me.

So basically if you ask people about seroquel you will get different answers as theres a huge difference in immediate release and extended release, and why they are prescribed it (night time sleep or daytime mood stablizer, anxiety, depression etc).

I start quetiapine tonight. My psychiatrist is switching me from risperidone, which didn't seem to be helping much, and was also messing up my blood panels.
I was put on it because I have trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, and nightmares - but not flashback-type nightmares right now.
So, wish me luck!

I'm really happy with the quetiapine so far. I'm able to fall asleep without needing total silence (which never happens where I live). I'm still waking up before my alarm but I'm waking more gradually, not leaping out of bed ready for a fight. And the tension in my back and shoulders has gone!
I am worried about the side effects and I feel like it's a really heavy-duty med to be prescribed so casually. But I'm on a pretty low dose (50 mg), which I hope reduces my risk.

Adds an extra 3 hours to my sleep.

quetiapine would, seriquel XR not so much (after your body is used to it anyway, maybe on higher doses im on); but seriquel XR seems to work for anxiety, and intense emotions in the day much better as it builds up in your system when quetiapine teeters out during the night time, at least the the most of it.

To each their own, which one is better depends on why you need it.

@nlittle1011, Quetiapine is the generic name for seriquel immediate release. There is also the extended release which doesnt have a generic called Seriquel XR and they are very VERY different.

Quetiapine looses the majority of its strength through the night and is given to people mostly at night. Its in my safe and i wont touch it.

Seriquel XR is used mostly during the day and once used to it (about a few days to a week) it no longer puts you to sleep, it builds up in your body and is used for day time relief of anxiety, depression, bipolar, borderline personality disorder and many things. That is what im on.

Its important to know the difference as what you need it for (night time help or daytime help) depends on which one his best to take.

@nlittle1011, If your on XR, your bottle will only say "Seiquel XR" as it has no generic. If it states "Quetiapine" then you are on immediate release and not XR.

I take mine at night right now but hope to move it to the morning.

It also depends on your mg as a higher mg will hit harder when it comes to sleep. Im currently on 200mg Seriquel XR and it doesnt make me sleep now that it has built up in my body.
