Hmm, from my memory, the slow-down lasted only a few minutes or so. And I timed it to 3 seconds at 11:46, which was already getting better. The problem was around 11:30, when the time it took to send a message got to 20-30 seconds

Was that just for you? We have measures in place so that if a users connection has issues, then data is stored and progressed upon reconnection. If a user unknowingly jams a connection, then the system will shut them out and block them, basically resetting their connection, to limit any issues for others.

Well, I cannot know for sure, but pixel said that she had problems with connection also at the same time, and seancharles said the connection was quirky...

it was definitely lagging at this end too. Time: 0730 AEST.

Seconding Saelben, it was 20-30 seconds between posts.
and sometimes i posted (obeying the 10 second rule) but the words never appeared in chat.

That sounds exactly what I was talking about above... if one user was having connection issues and causing delays in the server as a result, which is what normally happens and is expected to happen, then for a brief period it will slow everyone until the server isolates their connection as the issue, boots them, and thus reinstates them in an attempt to repair what they where doing. This subsequently then fixes the slow query and thus everyone goes back to normal again.

The chat has its own query system in place to manage problematic entries, so it sounds like it was doing its job correctly.

I've made a very minor change to the query limit to see if that helps speed up query processing. It could make things disastrously worse.

Ok... slowly and very progressively, I'm making minor changes to caching and tweaks to improve user performance. So far... it seems the issues are being improved. Saying that... I just implemented a new database caching system tonight... so IF anything weird and wonderful occurs, please tell me via ticket ASAP and I can disable it and go back to the drawing board.

Performance is a slow, progressive, trial and error approach. Based on feedback thus far, many of the issues are fixed. Saying that, I am aware there is still room for improvement, and that is being done, but MUST be done very slowly, as databases are quite finicky when it comes to tweaking, and there really is such a thing as too far and thus causes negative performance in other areas of functioning.

If you notice anything negatively weird suddenly, please report immediately via ticket.

Ok... as I didn't break things overnight, I have made another couple of very minor tweaks to see whether performance is improved or not.
