Ok - I love languages and I love learning new words. One of the things that I like about this forum is that it is so international. I have had to Google a few words to understand what was being said. I thought that I would start a "slang" thread. So far I have learned:
- sook: Australia and New Zealand . a timid, cowardly person, esp.a young person; crybaby. (Urban Dictionary)
- digger: Australia and New Zealand - a soldier
-dag: An Australian slang term. A dag is technically the matted wool on a sheeps tail, but in typical useage throughout Australia, it refers to people who don't have a neat, tidy or cultured appearance. It can also refer to a person who tends to be quite informal. It is not necessarily a derogatory term in modern useage. (Urban Dictionary) (I just deleted a quote in this post from Nicolette about "dag" because I was not sure if I should quote it here. Better safe than sorry.)
Some US slang:
-dude: USA - from what I have read, "dude" was once an insult used by people from the Western US referring to people from the East Coast. A "dude ranch" is a ranch for tourists or visitors from other parts of the US, so a "dude" was a faker of sorts. Now, we use it to refer to anyone, male or female. I usually only use it with people that I am friendly with, so it is a term of affection.
-half-stepper: a person that does an incomplete job (used in the famous Tribe Called Quest line "I don't half-step 'cause I'm not a half-stepper!") It's kind of self-explanatory but…there it is anyway.
If I got anything wrong, please correct me!
