Just wanted to pop in and update on this. The younger fellow I was talking about above is a no-go. It became pretty clear that he's looking for a girl, not a woman. Being classmates and having a mutual friend group, we are still friends. Probably better friends now than before, in fact.

On an better note, I've managed to find (or be found by, rather) a young man much closer to my age (1 year younger), and we're going on our third date tomorrow!

Kudos for dating and sounds like getting through these anxieties and having a good experience.

In addition to the great stuff people posted above, I just wanted to add the minor point that I know a woman (I believe now 70, have know the whole family most my life), who has never gotten a driver's license or learned to drive. And I never asked her why. Seems a little odd, but not indicative of something wrong with her. If you have trouble being in cars at all, then yeah, maybe an aspect to work on for the future, but I can't imagine someone holding it against you that you don't drive.

Yes I agree with Jemini who gives a toss if you do not drive right now, my son was 25 when he had to get a licence and a car and only for employment purposes and he was pretty angry about it all because they cost so much to maintain and keep registered and insured. My youngest son who will be 20 soon has the same attitude, doesn't want a car because they are too expensive. My sons used public transport and bikes to get around, kept them fit and saved them money. Some of their mates got cars and licences as soon as legally eligible but are now selling them and going back to doing what my sons do.
