My therapist said I have a depersonalization disorder...

My therapist just recently stated that I have a depersonalization disorder. I do not know what to do. I am young and still in school. And along with already having SI, I have many more things going on

I'm sorry you have a lot going on. Can you look at this with encouragement--that you are dealing with something that can be named and so maybe you can learn to manage it?

Therapists are also taking a best guess in diagnosis. They should focus their time on helping people, not applying labels to people, which they honestly cannot state 100% accurate, because mental health is a best guess game.

Simply, forget the label and look at the problem and the solutions to the problem. Everything else, is just noise.

I didn't know "depersonalization" was a stand-alone disorder. i thought it was a psych symptom with roots in cultural practices. on the cultural level, most of academia/politics are based on depersonalization. we are depersonalizing every time we try to see another point of view. in psychology, depersonalization is a coping tool which helps us process trauma, etc.

just thinking. . . in my 20th century psychotherapy, it was described as a good thing carried to destructive extremes.

I do not know what to do
Ask your therapist, or ask AI on this forum; then go back to your therapist for further discussion/support/clarification. I did not tell my therapist that I sought help from AI (anybody else got any suggestions/info/experience re: telling therapists about AI). AI helped me frame the question logically. Therapist apologised and future discussions were more helpful (i.e. I felt better after therapy and not worse). I agree with 'anthony', you need solutions, not labels. For a long time I paid good money to my therapists only to come back home after a session with a head full of 'noise'.

That is what I thought but I have no idea.

Getting a diagnosis like that is a lot to process while you're still in school. It’s good you're already seeing a therapist who can help you navigate this. Focus on the treatment plan they give you and try to take it one day at a time.

Depersonalization/derealization disorder is in both the ICD-11 (06 - Mental, behavioural or neurodevelopmental disorders -> Dissociative disorders -> 6B66 Depersonalization-derealization disorder) and the DSM-V (300.6 on page 302; pdf page 339). In both cases symptoms have to be not better explained by something else e.g. PTSD.

Hi, does it mean we shouldn't look for the exact diagnosis? But rather solve the symptoms that come up, regardless of which disorder they're connected to?.. Basically I think I have tons of syndromes, because I have tons of traumas, so that's what I thought to do, stop looking for the label of each one, and see how to solve one, regardless of where it belongs.. I feel like my disorders have become one big tangled ball ..

Thank you very much, every observation, experience, advice, response welcome 🙏

Θα μπορούσατε μήπως να μου αναφέρετε κάποια συμπτώματα που έχει αυτή η διαταραχή,της αποπροσωποποίησης;

Could you perhaps tell me some symptoms of this disorder, depersonalization?
I'm not comfortable, just exhausted from searching to put labels on it; to find out which and how many disorders have been created from a bad family environment, very toxic and it continues, with traumas like grief, the youngest family member, my brother, verbal psychological and physical violence, nervous father on the verge of alcoholism, also at age 8 I suffered sexual abuse from my ophthalmologist at the time, such things that suffocated me growing up, I also had the role of caregiver, mediator in the house, with the parents..
Thank you very much for any information
