hugs to you @hurtexchrstyun I feel you. Please do not be hard on yourself for not knowing any better like I did. It just makes the betrayal hurt more.Toxic religon does so much damage to so many people. I am glad that you got out.

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you, @hurtexchrstyun and I wish there were something I could do to help you. I am a Christian, and I love my church, but I can see how this situation of yours is nothing like mine! Can I pray for you?

When you feel like screaming that you finally found somebody else.

Someone who can relate that your greatest help if your greatest trigger
That understands that the content in the Bible is a trigger for you
Someone who can understand what it means to have a death thrown on your shoulders because you didn't do enough
Someone who can understand what it's like to be scared to go to church because you don't want to go into auto pilot...

It's funny you all say about undoing the damage. My pastor used to be an alcoholic. He's not ashamed of saying it. His last sermon was on discrimination. One of the things he talked about was discriminating against those with mental health issues ,different race, etc is evil and goes against God.

And.... He's southern baptist

I'm so sorry that you experienced this! That sounds horrifying! This breaks my heart that churches and religion act this way. I have seen churches and religion act this way plenty of times. It's awful. I have also been to and seen healthy churches and how it can help people. So seeing both sides of this is insightful for me. I am a Christian but do see the bad parts of religion. I don't consider myself religious because that is man made. I just say I'm a Christian. I think what is so lacking in churches is true understanding of mental health challenges. A lot of them just think it's spiritual and do not consider it as a physical medical problem etc. Or they tend to say forgive and move on and don't focus on the past and so on. I am very thankful for most of my experiences with God but most certainty am careful with who I am around in the church and where I attend. I have seen my church truly help people, nothing to do with demon possession etc! Yikes!

My family are Nazerreenes and so I was seeking out "Christian help" in my earliest adulthood ages for a few yrs (seperate from my family). I was told cutting was releasing a demon in the house, the noise I heard in my head (sounded like a crowded lunchroom) was demon oppression and I was made to renounce Satan, and that all of my mental issues was due to not allowing "god" to "steer my life" or not allowing "god" in at all, and not trying hard enough. Idle hands...

All false. This wasn't my trauma but my point is, any religous church can be wrong and can go to off far left or right and be extreme about things. The Bible (which I respect and is, at least, a history book) can be interupted in majorly different ways and instead of researching and finding the truth in the middle, or what is most likely the truth, most take the pastor's word for it even if it is only that pastor's opinion of what it means and opinion isn't fact.

Sorry,
