The Good Old Days V's Now

No-one had heard of the lottery, my dad did the pools, premium bonds and spot the ball in the newspaper. Do they still have the pools?

Green shield stamps, all the shops gave them out and then you stuck them in an album and depending on how many you got you were able to claim gifts. I remember the catalogue and looking at all the gifts. My mother got some silver candelaberas (spelling? ) she thought they were very posh.

Liberace!!!!! I mean who knew he was gay ? Well no-one even though it was patently obvious, gay was still used as a term to mean you are happy and even though it was obvious that personalities like Larry Grayson (the generation game), Kenneth Williams (Carry on films) and John Inman (Are you being served) were gay somehow it was kept hush hush because of the terrible attitudes to gay people in those days.

Carry on Films - Thinking they were the best funniest thing ever even though you did not get all the double entendres. Best one Carry on Screaming!

Cheesy comedies like Are you being served and Love thy neighbour and On the Buses. So politically incorrect!

Furniture that did not match and look like in a showroom. Flowery carpets and wallpaper and carpets in bright colours like yellow and green. Linoleum floors and those dolls that cover the toilet roll.

Coloured bathroom suites; white was so boring.

Following on from this, what about the Morcombe and Wise Show? Two men sharing a bed and no-one thought it was odd :D.

Morecombe and wise in bed.webp

Butlins holiday camps. Flying abroad was very exotic and only for the rich people. We went on holiday to the beach in England always in September at the end of the season, so it was cheap. A visit to Butlins and going to the fun fair was the highlight of the holiday. Hired deck chairs on the beach and the pier with all the games machines. It mostly rained.

Donkey rides on the beach and trampolines you could pay to jump on. No such thing as jumpey castles then. Rock sticks.

Sun protection creams were unheard of, sun bathing oils to give you a tan, though that never worked in the UK.

We danced at Discos.

There was no such thing as MacDonald's in the UK. Fish and chips was the only real take away food, no pizza places or fast food joints.

"Saturday Night At The Palladium" was one of our family favorite TV shows.

All round family entertainment, with no need to send the kids to bed early, just in case.

Finding a quarter in the couch while cleaning the house meant you were rich. Bazooka gum and tootsie rolls cost a nickel. Cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, Voltron, SilverHawks, He-man, Rainbow brite, Strawberry short cake, Care bears. Toys like Teddy Ruxpin, Cabbage patch dolls, sling shots, roller blades, skate boards, My little pony, Pound puppies, Garbage pail kids trading cards, Atari, Commadore 64, and Comic books. Later on Mortal Kombat was too violent of a video game, AOL was the king of the internet, Pagers were the in thing to have, grunge music came around, Jeans that were so large you could have made 5 pair out of them, Flannel shirts became popular, Wallets on chains. Parents still taught their kids the value of a dollar, to respect their elders and that hard work pays off in the end.

Yeah I was a part of a lot of different things. Raised by baby boomers at the dawn of the computer age. I used to own an ipod but I prefer my 1980's record collection, I used to own a cellphone but I realized I like not being reachable at times.
