The Last Grade That Witnessed The Attack

Today, a lot of things reminded me of the day of the attack. They gave us all "We will never forget..." shirts after it happened and a bunch of kids in my grade wore them to school today. I went to barrow a pencil and it said "You're in our thoughts in prayers" from some Texas school. The reminders are here still.

I actually got to talk about it with 2 other seniors. We rarely (if ever) talk about that day seriously, but with the trial approaching, I guess more kids are open/not as embarrassed.

The other kids told me how the media has been trying to interview a bunch of the kids because the trial is on Monday. Some media people even tracked some of them down at college. The victims that testified can't talk to media though right now. Something about their lawyers don't want them to. The one girl told me she's applying to college to be a therapist now. She said that good morning america asked her to be on, but the only kids doing interviews are the ones that weren't even there.... idk. That's kinda weird, right?

All the seniors(my grade. we were freshmen when it happened) were really nice about it. A lot of them careful during this time. The younger kids not so much. One of them overheard us talking and said "It's kinda pathetic that he wanted to kill like more kids than Columbine and failed miserably. He took so much time to plan and failed." and laughed about it. It's such a stark difference between my grade and the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen.

I hope that it goes well. I said to the other seniors like "everyone makes jokes about it. makes it seem like we are over it. Maybe they'll just let him off". But this other kid was like "no. he has like 800+ years with all the victims combined. They did that instead of life because by splitting it up, theres a less likely chance he'll get parol. Everyone jokes, but the victims and stuff were really serious about testifying". That was comforting to hear. Eased my mind a bit.

We were speculating about how he was going to try to say he wasn't guilty before. There's school footage of it. The school didn't release it to the media out of respect obviously. And the kid that did it, the night before watched the Columbine footage released. I'm glad. This way people can't idolize it as much.

I guess it's just odd... Talking to kids in my grade verses the other kids. I'm not trying to suggest that they are bad people or that all of them are like this, but it just has become super prevalent during this time. Kinda odd.

It's even weirder that tomorrow I'm taking the SATs and there's the homecoming too, yet this is kinda dominating over all of the things that are 'normal' for high school.
