The physiatrist put me on anti phycotics which I've refused to take,

Remember "emotional unstabilty" doesnt mean BPD; you have to fit 7 of the 9 symptoms to be diagnosed BPD.

As to what I quoted, seriquiol is an anti psycotic but in low doses has been approved for BPD to help level off extremes of emotions.

Abilify is also an anti psycotic and its on tv to add to an anti depressenant to help with depression, also in low doses. I gave it a month before flushing it.

Being on an anti psycotic doesnt mean you are "psycotic"...low doses of anti psycotics can do wonders in helping folks in many different ways.

A-typical anti-psychotics like seroquel are now being used for a whole host of mental health issues where there's no psychosis - personality disorders, depression, anxiety, ptsd...good stuff ('celt for the side effects)!

And yeah, being diagnosed as BPD is no small side-issue. But sometimes being able to accept that we have BPD traits can be really helpful. Really really helpful!

I understand this but if you go to google and type emotional instability into the search engine, first link it's categorised under it.

The anti phycotics gave me a terrible reaction so I'm sticking to DBT and going on a journey with myself in the freedom I've found after 8 years. If along the journey I need them then I will do :)

20 years ago when I was diagnosed, it was just PTSD. The chronic version was never mentioned to me and until coming here id have thought BPD something more like schizophrenia and nothing like me at all.
Early days here somebody mentioned BPD to me and I googled.

Low and behold, I've got 9 out 9 of the symptoms listed in the criteria for BPD.

And wow did that leave me feeling shattered, BPD sounds like something thats my own fault, and was an earth shattering revelation for me.

I'm not jumping the gun, but I will definitely be mentioning this in therapy.

Looking at it with an open mind id say its very likely that my mum, sisters and daughter all have traits of bpd.

And here I was thinking my behaviours were just a result of not ever learning how to get what I need from people through healthy interaction.
This sucks a bit.

With ptsd, we often have depressive symptoms. Regardless of whether we meet the diagnostic criteria for a Major Depressive Episode, we still borrow treatment strategies used for treating Depression to help us with our symptoms.

Same goes for our anxiety symptoms.

In my mind, BPD symptoms are no diifferent:)

DBT is great as im also doing DBT and if they gave you a bad reaction then i wouldnt take them either (its why Abilify got flushed) but i wanted to advise of that info plus I would caution against self diagnosis of BPD via google or any means and let a therapist do that, self diagnosing anything is dangerous but most especially mental disorders.

Just my 2 cents.

BPD sounds like something thats my own fault,

If you have BPD, its totally not your fault. Its unclear of how some gets it though its very clear how I got it.

Personality disorders are manageable things and PTSD & BPD go together often.

I would def mention it to your therapist. Mine went through the DSM with me on every diagnosis and we both agreed to each symptom I have. For BPD I have 8 of the 9, I dont idolize people one min and after a mistake they make hate them the next but I do have very black & white, all or nothing thinking.

DBT helps a lot with emotional regulation and distress tolerance. I bought this book:

Dead Link Removed

Its great! I had no clue that both of my books, this one and the PTSD sourcebook I bought yrs ago were 2 of the ads on here til recently. Ads are well chosen! ;)

Indeed! Actually anxiety generally goes along with both PTSD & BPD. And symptoms cross each other a lot. It is easy to misdiagnose someone.

I was quickly diagnosed with BPD because that was obber obvious. But PTSD, given knowledge of my past, wasnt diagnosed until a few yrs later.

@Zara Lopez

Oh ok, I suppose I should of known being that you were on an antipsycotic but got confused when you said to google it. Sorry about that.

But dont toss all antipsycotics; Abilify did nothing but make me sleep for a month so I flushed it. But seriquiol ER (which was almost $500 retail and I paid over $100 for it after insurerence; so if it works im gonna have to pay over $100 extra a month) but Im trying it. Very low dose, lowest actually, and may need to graduially go up. She gave me 2 a day in case its not strong enough. But knowing how crazy sauce the IR at its lowest dose is, i doubt I will need more. That im starting on the 23rd.

Basically what im saying is all antipsycotics are different and at very low doses can help a HUGE amount of mental disorders, BPD and Major Depressive Disorder are two of the many.
