It's stories like this that I find very distasteful, especially the hypocrisy. How many starving children could be fed with the amount of money squandered here?

"One day ahead of the papal conclave in Rome, The Independent has revealed that the scandal hit Holy See has purchased a $31 million share of the Rome apartment block that houses Europe’s biggest gay sauna.

It's a move that has left a sea of red faces to match the red capes of the horrified cardinals. But Cardinal Ivan Dias, the head of the Congregation for Evangelization of Peoples, who is due to participate in today's election at the Sistine Chapel, may be blushing more than most.

According to the Independent, the 76-year-old 'prince of the church' enjoys a 12-room apartment on the first-floor of his magnificent palazzo, located at 2 Via Carducci, just yards from the ground floor entrance to the gay bath house and sauna.

There are 18 other Vatican apartments in the block, many of which house priests, the Independent reports."

I think that the thread is, "..what do you think?" I think it was brave to make an unprecednted move to resign. And I think whomever has been chosen, is good, holy, strong and becomes a courageous force for good throughout the world. To reconcile the past, move forward (daily), and unite others in peace and solidarity. We ARE a global village, right.. ?

why is it that many of these sicko's are condemned to a life of silence and prayer as punishment when they should be rotting in jail?

The catholic church are so obsessed with sex it defies belief ... think about all they stand for on homosexuality,contraception,celibacy,abortion all sexual topics.... and yet look at the priests and nuns that have sexually and physically abused so many and continue to do so while protected by the catholic church and " the holy father"..... just sickening.

Sorry- not to offend anyone, but the CC is an evil entity. I suffered a living hell in a parochial school for five long, vicious years. It took me 39 years to realize these CC leaders are nothing but con men who bilk the masses by presuming to tell them the only way to get to Heaven is through the church and by forking over their hard earned dollars, confessing their sins, and singing Halleluiah. JC HATED the idea of putting money first. HIS church was the streets, the river beds, the desert floor.

Um....I'm sorry, but NOBODY and NOTHING stands between me and my relationship with the CREATOR or my connection to JC's suffering. The very best thing that can happen is these poor sheeples who pay this sick, bigoted, misognynistic entity for false promises of life in the hearafter get a clue that they have been INDOCTRINATED. REPEAT AFTER ME: "Nobody and nothing comes between me and God. He hears me whether I am in a field of flowers, on top of a mountain, or in the loo! If I give my money to anybody, it will be the homeless man on the corner, or to a domestic violence shelter."

I am sorry if this sounds angry- but I am. I was a skinny little seven year old when the TRUTH behind the LIES was shown to me in the form of pedophile priest who hurt not only me, but hundreds of other children- one was a nine month old infant. What did Ratzass do? He fought me and slammed the door in the face of my co-victims. Watch Deliver Us From Evil. Nuff said!

I think it would be naive to believe that he resigned due to health concerns. After all all those priest that were finally, FINALLY removed from their posts also did so under the guise of "health concerns". It's not like that's not a familiar pattern.

He was in charge of the office that directly oversaw the handling of the sexual abuse cases. His name is on letters directly sent to him involving these cases. Some of these letters and correspondences were just released this month as part of a bankruptcy settlement. He knew of the shuffling, he knew not just the allegations but the proof for the allegations. And actually I wouldn't be surprised if there was more.

I wouldn't be surprised if he himself had an allegation against him. How far would the church go to protect that information?
