If I could get my seamanship up, I’d love to drag a boat around the Caribbean until I got bored of it. Maybe do the N.Atlatic Gyre after that... gulfstream/ canary/ north equatorial... then catch a ride on the south equatorial skim Brazil, cheat via Panama... grab the PacGyre and tack around the rim. I also love the idea of following the old Viking routes. Scandanavia to the Baltic coast; Germany, France, & Spain; into the Med & Middle East & Northern Africa. Ice & Spice.
Right before Egypt decided to go f*ck itself I was going to be taking my kiddo on a dahabeeyah cruise on the Nile. Old Kingdom, to New. With stopovers at some of the 1890s hotels (Mena House in Cairo, Winter Palace in Luxor, etc.) in addition to all the great sites. If we could just get our timing down (the country would ever be so kind as to unf*ck itself, when I’m actually solvent), I’d still really like to winter in Egypt sometime. Even if they don’t let you climb on the pyramids anymore >.<
And a massive dim sum craving has just reminded me that I haven’t been to Hong Kong since before the British lease ended. If for nothing else than lunch on one of the floating restaurants, I’d love to go. But it would also be interesting to see how it’s changed.
Ditto, I haven’t been back to the French Quarter in New Orleans, since Katrina. I hear it’s latinized a ton. Which would be fascinating. Creole + Latin? Hell yeah. Bring it. I can’t imagine it’s been a smooth transition, but undoubtedly an interesting one.
