Please follow the link below to show you support....

Please sign the HM Government e-petition to set budgets for GPs to provide talking therapy for survivors of sexual abuse. There is plenty of time, the deadline is November 2013, but the sooner you do it the better. Please spread the word.

I have looked at it. Nearly signed it but then bottled out. It means giving my real name and address. I am having palpitations just at the thought.

As you say, there is no rush. I have almost a year to pluck up the courage.

This is important, and now is the time as it is such a political hot potato.

I was really lucky to access immediate NHS therapy as soon as I needed it. However that was a fluke and I know most people have to wait for months. If I'd had to wait I am not sure I would still be here...

Hi Lucy & All,

If you want to put a link to this anywhere please do. Make a poster and stick it at your doctors, therapists, support groups, shelters, women's centers etc etc. If you have people..friends, partners, supportive family who would sign it on your behalf if you find it too nerve wracking, that's cool. I suppose there are ways of getting this signed even if you aren't at a stage that you can do it yourself.

Also I'm not sure if you have to be a UK resident or not? To my mind if you're not but you support the principle then try to sign it anyway. The NHS is looked too as an example of medical welfare on an international level and if your country isn't addressing this issue on a national level, which lets face it, it probably isn't; then survivors of abuse need to raise the issue at any given opportunity on a cross border basis.

Amen. ;)

Pathologically private as I am I managed to knock some sense into myself and signed the thing Springer. Its important. Thank you and "Amen" indeed. ;)

FYI,

'Anyone signing the e-petition must provide their name, home address and email address. No personal details will be published on the site. This information will not be used for any purpose other than in relation to the e-petition.
The government may contact you by email to:
  • confirm you have submitted an e-petition
  • confirm you have signed an e-petition
  • provide updates about the e-petition
You will only receive a maximum of five emails for each e-petition.
If you sign an e-petition (are a 'signatory'), you will only receive updates if you choose this option when you sign it.'

As far as I can tell once you have entered your details they are kept but not in public to view on the website. I suppose that if the e-petition reaches the amount of signatures required then this may change. I will inquire to see exactly what happens.

Pathologically private as I am I managed to...sign[ed] the thing

Me too....High Five :stop:!! Another idea for spreading the word would be to email it to your therapist who may be persuaded to forward it to there clients, colleagues, professional development crowd.

Copied directly from the FAQs page...

Is there a list of signatories for each e-petition?

We keep a record of who has signed each e-petition and show the total number of signatures. We also show the name of the person who created the e-petition, but we don’t show the names or other details of any of the signatories.

I have signed.

I went through the National Health Service (NHS) system, when I was first diagnosed with PTSD (as a result of stranger rape at knife point).

The NHS system wasn't great. I met with psychiatrists and psychologists who had no experience of dealing with sexual assault / abuse. My saviour was a charity, where I worked with a therapist who had extensive knowledge of dealing with sexual assault, sexual abuse and trauma. She was my life line - and this sort of therapy should be available on the NHS.

Hey Springer - would you mind if I put a link to it on the My Sex Abuse forum - to spread the word
[DLMURL="http://www.mysexabuse.com/"]My Sex Abuse Forum[/DLMURL] - sister forum of PTSD Forum, for all those who have suffered sexual abuse /assault.

Springer, I will put your link on the My Sex Abuse Forum.

I have sent the following query to the HM Government e-petitions team to get some clarification for anyone on here or for anyone who wants to know because they may pass the e-petition link onto others in the real world! As soon as I get a reply I will post it here.

The query....

'The nature of this petition means that the people whose best interests it is in are often too frightened to sign it. I am inquiring on behalf of a large on-line community as to the exact nature of the privacy conditions and how they may change if the petition becomes successful.

I have read the FAQs page and understand that once the personal details of a signatory are entered they are stored but not published on the website. However, I also read that you have master documents which are accessible upon request and do contain this information. Also if an e-petition is successful is the list of signatories published and if so in what detail, format and to whom?

Finally, I was wondering if by any chance a person wished to sign but didn't want to give their full name, would initials and an address suffice? Have you come across this issue before regarding people who are worried about the implications of having their data potentially made public?

I hope that you could give me some precise response as I'm sure you will understand that for some people who really want to support this, divulging personal information is often disproportionately stressful and being defeated by that only increases their isolation.

Many thanks...

Ps. I will be posting your reply on the PTSD forum website to try and reassure interested members regarding the process.
