@anthony, sounds like a day/night in any ER in the US. So why the f*ck can't we model healthcare after Austrialia and the like? Anyone? Crickets?

I have a feeling it is due to the almighty dollar. Insurence companies and money and how money passes hands. Pharmacutical companies/pharmacy plans on insurences (and mine - currently as its changing on the 1st, maybe the same and may not be, unsure on this one - has an add on OptumRx, forced mail order pharmacy). Sounds like the right answer to me.

it just baffles me why every nation does not provide free health care for all

It baffles me as well. Like @She Cat my coverage will be on the chopping block. Which brings me to this point--Education! As an educator in this country, I am already underpaid, unappreciated (this is generally speaking), and under-represented (and possibly to be uninsured. again. ). And in terms of broken systems...well. Let me just say that we might find ourselves in a different position today if public schools were not in such an abysmal condition...

If the federal government running health care would work in the US, within a US culture and economy, and within the way our government (doesn't) work, why doesn't the VA work? It's really a dysfunctional mess.

Genuine question.

I'm very comfortable with trying out single payer / socialized medicine on a state level. Please let's do this! I'd like to see it work on a state or other smaller scale first before we nationalize it. I think this is a place that liberals and conservatives could actually agree... and that's how health care can be reformed in the quickest manner.

State governments are generally more flexible and able to change and adapt. The federal government isn't. They couldn't even get the ACA website to work... but my state could get their state site to work. They could be more flexible and quick.

We have a lot of factors in healthcare that other nations don't have to contend with in the US when it comes to nationalizing healthcare - like the fact that drug companies can advertise to patients in the US (and this won't change anytime soon) or the amount we spend on medical research and on health care in general. That creates not just an economic difference but a cultural one --- and both economics and culture affect how people vote and thus how even socialized medicine would function in the US.

Corporations are people in the US. Right or wrong, that's the legal reality. That's going to change how "we the people" run our government if/when it runs healthcare.

We spend more, and we get more care in general than any other nation, but it doesn't mean our lifespans are longer. (What Country Spends The Most (And Least) On Health Care Per Person?)

It does mean the American expectation of what health care should look like could be much higher. We are a-fix-it-now and give-us-the-best population. We are very indidualistic. Not exactly known for our patience as a country. Private insurance isn't eliminated in Australia at the moment, some still have that to fill in gaps in government coverage.

In other countries people probably (maybe?) have a greater tolerance for delays, but here, we are more likely to spend ourselves into oblivion ON EVERYTHING as a nation, because.... me, me, me. We nearly crashed the global economy in part because Americans chased cheap home kind they couldn't afford. I love my country dearly, but sometimes as a culture, we are financially stupid. Just sayin. In other nations, I think there is more of a sense of "we" and that not everyone can have everything they want all the time.

Trump seems to like Australia's way of doing it though, sort of: Trump doubles down: ‘Of course’ Australia has better health care than the US

Some may remember a few month back my husband spent 8 days in ICU due to acute respiratory failure from toxic mold in our apartment. It has also caused damage to his heart. The second day in the hospital was when his insurance was supposed to kick in for 90 day wait period from his employer.

We have waited and waited for the insurance card to come in since we are being hounded by both the hospital and the ambulance company. Well a few days ago, the H.R. department at his work told him he never filled out the medical form, only the dental and vision form. After a big fuse my husband finally got to see his file and pointed out the medical form was filled out and dental and vision form happened to be on the reverse side so they only sent one side of the paper.

Well now H.R. is saying that because he missed open enrollment no preexisting conditions prior to June 17th will be covered therefore his hospital bill isn't covered.

We have met with lawyers about suing the landlord for the medical bills, but apparently we would lose in court due to a stipulation in our lease stating they are not liable for injuries that occur on the property.

Looks like we are stuck with nearly quarter million dollars in medical bills. Yeah, right. I have suggested filling bankruptcy, but my husband gets to upset and just shuts down, so I don't know what we are going to do.

Believe me, I know. My husband is a teacher. See above. Sorry, I posted before I saw we were on page 16 already.

I am also so so sorry @Fadeaway. And yes, this thread moves quickly.

Corporations are people in the US. Right or wrong,

I will never, ever get behind this idea and I do not love my country dearly. We are a capitalistic, racist (a capitalism largely based on slavery, actually), and inhumane (heavily armed) society that is actually *choosing* to devolve.
