When the 2nd amendment was created, we did not have these assault rifles. At first, I thought that citizens do not really need to have these and maybe they do need to be banned, but theres always more to think about in any of these decisions. Im a democrat basically but like most of us, I have my unique set of beliefs and they are open for discussion and change.
As others have pointed out, the 2nd amendment allows individuals to have guns( assault weapons) to protect themselves against government (should that ever be necessary). I don't think we need to loose more rights. I guess I am on the fence about gun laws.
I think it was justmehere , in an earlier post, who stated that any expelled kid needs to have social services involved and an evaluation. I totally agree and thought that was already happening too. I also know that social workers are overworked with heavy caseloads and that prevention requires that no kid falls between the cracks here. I just don't think that our country is willing to provide the necessary funding and adequate programs to do what is needed to prevent these tragedies.
I worked for a short time for an agency that provides services for adolescents. Counselors/Social Workers see these at risk kids, often in the home or school setting and less frequently in the office. Most are paid for by Medicaid rather than private insurance. Medicaid pays substantially more than private insurances would and it was all about billing, not doing a good job in many aspects. There are some good agencies that provide services, but there are many that are not so good and it comes down to making big $$$ for CEO's and paying workers very little. I did not have to work and could not do what I consider a half ass job so I resigned, but I got a first hand view of how this all works and it made me sick. I was told to back date reports($$$) which is reason to loose license-of course I did not do it! I have had many colleagues that also worked for different agencies right out of school and heard the same kinds of things from them. IMO, so much is needed to repair the mental health system that is in place for these kids.
