There are very good projected outcomes for having the universal basic income implemented. One great example was the one trial run that started in 1974 in Dauphin Canada. The most significant accomplishment, I believe, is the reduction of depression, anxiety and better physical and mental health among the people in the community. We need radical social and political changes to change this increasing problem of disability caused by depression and other health problems.

@Fionas74 If you are totally handicapped and can't take care of your basic needs, that's one thing. But I'm not for setting up a freeloader system, that for d*mn sure. Everybody pays their way. Period. :happy:

@Fionas74. Nixon and Ford were asswipes. I don't like either one. The "Great Society" set up a plantation society, like the cotton plantations in the South before the Civil War. It keeps the poor (slaves) dependant (chained) on the government (plantation owner, master, Democrats) hand outs (food stamps, government housing). You are promoting the institution of slavery. :whistling:

@SaharaSon
Because nobody has any actual ambition right?
It's all just the paycheque? If someone didn't need 4 jobs to eat and have a roof at the same time, they'd all just stop working?
Sit on the front lawn with a beer and a 22, taking random pot shots at the camaro parked on the lawn, with cinder blocks under the brake rotors?

Nobody would possibly take the new found financial freedom to... oh I dunnno.... Maybe go to school? Become a doctor or a lawyer?... Ya'know.. something other than a cashier at a wal-mart, or overnight clerk at a circle-K?

You don't agree with the idea, Fine whatever. I don't understand the hostility towards everyone suggesting something different than the current status quo.

@Neverthesame. That's all we need, more lawyers. :hilarious: No, but seriously, if someone wants to go to school, they can. It is all about want to, if you are a person that's wants to, you will find a way. It is easier to go to school today, if you are poor, than it has ever been. Heck, you can get Phd's on line now. I'm so tired of people making excuses why they can't do something. I have seen, over and over again, hard working people, with nothing, coming from other countries and making a very good life for themselves in the US. Get to work, and stop making excuses. ;)

Not at all what I said.

I said 4 jobs, not one. 4.
How many people have to work 3 or more jobs, to pay for school?
Doesn't leave much time for study.
Sure it's honest, has to be. Napping your way through med school, between double shifts for 6+years Isn't healthy or conducive to learning.

I'd rather have a country full of doctors who strove to be the best in their studies, because they wanted to. Not a country full of doctors who struggled to pass the course while working when they should have been studying. Or burning out before they even get their doctorate.

Sure there's other ways. But being in debt up to your eyeballs for the next 15 years isn't a great option. Nor is spending 15 year's in the military something everyone can do.

PTSD= no army for me.

I can also imagine quite a few of them would be happy to be a doctor, without the BMW.
I'd do that.
I don't care about a huge paycheque. I'd love to practice medicine. I'd happily do it for the wage I make now. Which is far less than 100K a year. Not kidding. I'd love to just do the job, f*ck the money. I'd definitely enjoy that a f*ck of a lot more than I do offloading trailers all night.

Why does the drive, ambition and energy need to be sucked out of these future doctors and lawyers before they even set foot in the classroom?

What you are proposing - working for the pure joy and passion of it - isn’t a bad thing on an individual basis. Education costs are too high in the US - and that area is a great example of why government funding and control isn’t always the solution. Education costs issued to actually be fairly reasonable (much more so than now) when the government didn’t promise to pay for it. When government promises to pay for something, costs just about always go up. Why? Because not everyone is as altruistic as we would like them to be.

Furthermore - what you are proposing, which is basically a version of socialism - has yet to actually work long haul in practice anywhere in the world. All nations that have implemented socialism (or communism for that matter) eventually find that they can’t provide the same in results and quality, and the standard of living declines over time. It ends up not being very compassionate or joy centered at all.

I believe that government control isn’t the solution to many of the the problems we face. Is there a place for government intervention? Sure. But I’ve worked in government and with government, in addition to the private and non-profit sectors. If a problem needs to be fixed, government intervention will often (not always) be the least effective way to fix it.

@Neverthesame. You absolutely can become a doctor. You have a healthy ethic for being in medicine. Not everyone goes straight through school to an MD. I would venture to guess that most docs got there by doing it through a piecewise pathway. Step by step. Some pathways: 1) CNA-LPN-RN-NP-MD 2) Cardiotech-PA-MD 3) EMT-Paramedic-MD. There are many other routes. Once you get one of the early certifications you can get one job and get help paying for your schooling from your employer. You can do it, just break it down, and do it one step at a time. I have seen it done many times. :tup:

@Neverthesame I see at least four qualities in you that would make you a great doc. 1) The willingness to work hard 2) Discipline 3) The ability to take instruction 4) A healthy ethic. If you can begin to direct your work toward the medical fields I think you will take off. Medicine is tough, long hours, but that is nothing new for you. You should go for it. :cool:
