but I don't think Trump voters would vote for a woman.

No they wouldn't. But neither would they would for Bernie (or rather, only a very very small minority).

The last election has shown that conservatives have mostly voted red. The percentage of votes for Trump hadn't changed from red votes before.

While people who'd normally vote blue had elected to not vote at all or vote third-party.

The problem are the Bernie-or-Busters.

There's always going to be a subset of die-harders for one non-candidate or the other. Nader people helped elect George W. Bush in 2000. Libertarian Gary Johnson supporters probably helped Trump win the last election.

Us Democratic Socialists are the main group of Bernie supporters, and I'm confident most of us will vote for whoever the Democrat is even if we don't like it. We know what's at stake.

Stein voters also made a huge difference in the last election. Independent voters and non-voters make or break a blue candidate - unfortunately.

Just the other day I had a die-hard Bernie-fan tell me that if Bernie doesn't get the nomination, he's fine with another 4 years of Trump. I told him he doesn't even realize the position of sheer privilege he's speaking from.

Extremism is neither ok on the right nor the left. Period.

Personally, I'm not going to blame those who vote for third parties (because I am one). My vote doesn't count anyway because my state's electoral votes go pretty consistently one way. But, I totally agree with a former governor, Jesse Ventura (who I also voted for). "The only wasted vote is one for someone other than the person you really want to win." I think our biggest problem is the tyranny of.the two parties. We don't often actually get a choice we like. At least people other than the die hard party loyalists don't.

Last time around, I voted for Jill Stein. My state's electoral votes went for Clinton. I was quite sure they would. The Green Party most closely aligns with my personal views. I couldn't stomach either of the major party candidates and was hoping we could get a third party major party status here.

I think people, especially republicans, are over estimating the number of "trump voters". First, remember, he actually lost the popular vote. I know a fair number of republicans who held their noses and voted for him, just because they disliked Clinton so much. Some of them have told me they'd actually have voted for Sanders because they didn't like trump either. He was the least of two evils. (May or may not be true.) Then there are independents who (and this is beyond my comprehension) who wanted Sanders, then voted for trump. All in all, give people a decent candidate and a well run campaign and I think he's toast. Then I hope they lock him up.

I have absolutely no problem with voting your conscience where it doesn't actually "matter" (i.e. non-swing states) or on the local level, on the contrary, I very very much encourage it.

I do, however, have a problem with those where it actually DID matter and decided the election, because it comes down to either ignorance or indifference.

Sometimes I have to put my own pride after what's best for the community, society, at large and go with the compromise option.

But then again, I'm European... your guys' two-party system and Electoral College is MAJORLY flawed anyways.

However, there actually are statistics that show that the Republican candidate (i.e. Trump) did receive the same amount of votes than Republican candidates in the past, whereas the Democrat candiate lost votes to either third-party or non-voters. So yes, they did make all the difference.

And I just personally think that sometimes it's necessary to hold your nose for a little bit as to not loose the long haul. There are times for making a stance and times where one should just swallow one's own pride.

I myself have voted not for "my" party/candidate but for the best next thing in the past just to not waste my vote, but did vote my conscience when I knew they'd actually have a chance and my vote actually would matter.

Edit:

I keep seeing (Bernie) folks equate any of the other establishment/corporate DNC candidates with Trump. And this is just utter BS and the very same propaganda the GOP is using, just from the left. I'm seriously no fan of most if not any of them, but basically going all "same same but different but still same" is not only BS but just plain dangerous and that people don't even recognize that (or don't care) speak heaps about their positions of privilege.

There were MANY do or die Bernie fans in the last election who refused to vote for Hillary.

I liken it to a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. It’s incredibly short sighted.

Everyone I know who is midline, independent, or usually votes democrat that didn’t vote for Hilary, did so because she committed treason.

Morality, not pique.

There’s a rough split in that group between those who believe she should have gone to prison &/or been executed, and those who can allow a traitor freedom, but not public office... much less the highest office in the land.
