What Is A Trauma Therapist?

aren´t all, or basically all, psychological problems caused by some kind of trauma?

I don't think so. For example narcissism isn't. Nor is delusion or depression, necessarily. Grief, for example, is grief - trauma is something different, A lot of psychological problems stem from too great a sense of entitlement, not having been given limits and boundaries as a child, not having been given validation as a child and numerous other things which have an impact but are not traumatic. (Trauma being intense fear, horror and helplessness.)

In response to your original question, I don't think it matters if a therapist has other areas of expertise as well. As people have said, these could well be related to trauma anyway, but even if the link is fairly slight, does it matter? In my view, a trauma therapist knows the theory and practice, understands about victim-blaming (and doesn't do it), and is very senstive to keeping things as safe as possible. If they also have other areas that they understand, I don't see that it's a problem.

I think the most important things are (a) to see someone with training, understanding and experience with trauma, (b) to see someone who you feel comfortable with and who shares your values and beliefs about healing/recovery and (c) dare I say - not to intellectualise it too much? I say that because this year I had to find a new T and the first one wasn't the right fit but I kept being over-analytical about that. I found someone else and kept wondering if she was right, if it was the right time, if it was the right thing to do - but she's qualified and experienced, she and i are a really good match in our approaches, and having checked all the basics and important things, I needed to just get on with it and see if it worked.

Yes, I see your point.
