Why can't i remember what i did today?

I think of memory like this:

Your brain is like a file cabinet where things are categorized and filed away. As the cabinet gets full, things that are less important get "shredded". Who would really want to remember every moment of every day?

Anyone can have memory lapses as more important issues are stuffed in the file cabinet. For example: Your doctor's appointment is important but may not be as important to YOU as your child's little league game. You've been dreading going to the doctor for some time but looking forward to see your child pitch for the first time. Therefore, you concentrate more on remembering the game (hence putting that file in front of the row of files.)

Life takes over and files get shuffled and rearranged. Stress is your file clerk and the more overworked it gets, the less orderly your files become. Eventually, you get around to remembering your doctor's appointment but it got misfiled behind preparing your tax return and has already passed. So you reschedule and put a sticky note on the FRONT of the file cabinet to remind you every time you get your next file.

When you go to the doc's, he may give you something to help your file clerk do it's job or it may confuse the file clerk, causing it to throw things in the cabinet willy-nilly. So the question remains: Why can't you remember what you ate for breakfast?

A) Evaluate your meds: Taking something new...increased dosage?
B) Evaluate your stressors: Treatment bringing out old buried memories (files that have fallen behind the drawer to gather dust?) that have to be dealt with?
C) Evaluate your meals: Perhaps add more flavor or variety? (j/k)

Just a thought from a carers POV.

I often tell my son when he expresses his surprise that I dont remember certain inane details of my life or that things that people have told me (like appts or phone numbers or names of authors or actors etc) that I didnt want to use up my mind space with that so I didnt spend any energy trying to remember it. Stuff I know I will need later on like appts or whatever I will jot down..but outta sight outta mind! My son has an autism spectrum disorder and to him this is unfathomable...he seems to remember everything that enters his consciousness!
