News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

What I can't understand is why the uk is only fining the organisers of rule breaking parties etc, why aren't they fining everyone whose there? Surely that would be more of a deterant to not go if you knew you were going to be hit with a £10k fine. Instead they are fining one person and letting the rest just walk away.
They fine everyone here in Australia, thus it happens less, but still happens. It tends to make the news now when some clown does have a party if against rules at the time.

They should be doing that here. My sister told me earlier tonight about a party near her at New Year. 50+ people attending the party in a small house, only the householder was fined, the rest were just told by the police to leave and walked away scot free. It's happening so often here, it doesn't even make the news unless it's a slow news day.

They have to do more to discourage this kind of behaviour in the uk.

In the states its useless try to use fines because we have such a huge number of people who still believe its a hoax or that its really not that bad. 300,000 deaths isn't a number they agree with so they believe its all aconspiracy. Trying to track them all down and fine them would be impossible - not to mention the violence that ensues on the rare occasions that the police or the health department does try to confront them

Businesses that try to stick to the mask mandate are still having employees getting assaulted by the "violating my rights" crowd, so they have pretty much stopped even trying to keep them out.

Millions of people traveled everyday during the holidays, even after the cdc basically begged then not to, and while they had to wear masks on the planes once they got out of the airport many proudly said they were going to big family gatherings because no one in the government was going to tell them what they could or couldn't do.

The saddest part is that these people really don't care unless it affects them personally so the idea of wearing a mask to protect others isn't even on their radar 😔 😡

Sad to see that this is truly who we are

Yeah I've come across that too, the 'well I don't know anyone whose had it so it can't be as bad as they're making out,' brigade.

The scenes we had in the news here of crowded trains because people wanted to leave London before it went into the strictest tier were just sickening. I can understand they wanted to see their families at Christmas, I get that, but how can they profess to love their families when they willingly risk taking a deadly virus home to them, just because it's Christmas. If that's a normal family, I'm sort of glad I'm from a dysfunctional one.

I think this pandemic has really shown some people for who they truly are.

willingly risk taking a deadly virus home to them,
I think part of the issue is it's not a "deadly virus", not to most people. Percentages of death between 1 and 4%? (i did the math of it for where i live awhile ago- cases reported vs death rate reported)
Most people think it's lower I imagine. I think science has said it's lower.

And humans have this awesome thing we do. If it's not directly effecting us we can't understand "what the big deal is".

Add to it the 'confusing' information out there. People who don't understand that science is an evolution of hypothesis, theory, experiment, results (i would say 70+% of people. being generous i think) expected govt. to have very precise clear cut answers immediately when this started and don't understand why they didn't.

They can't understand how complex the issue of lockdown is.
People can't fathom 1% of 7 billion.

And they don't have to decide between someones livelihood and someones life.

Most people here still think restrictions are to "save lives". Saving lives they think means making sure most people don't even catch it. Except, most people who catch it are fine so...... makes no sense.

Forgetting that (here at least) restrictions and lock down mean keeping spread slow (not stopping spread) enough that hospitals can attempt to treat people who do end up with nasty complications (plus others who need icu not for covid). Saving lives means having treatment available to help people through the worst of it.

And then everyone has their own ideas of what "risk" is and how much they're willing to take. As well as priorities. Is it better to quit working and struggle making utility bill payments or go to the office and possibly bring home covid to the grandparent that lives with them....
Is mental health of and 88 year old senior more of a priority than them passing away this year, when they could get deadly complications from the flu also?
*shrugs*

Dunno if I'm explaining right and I am in no way saying i condone disregarding lock down restrictions or rules.

Though a lot of the crap people make the news I still think there's more people doing right, following their restrictions etc.

Fines here are have been given out to all attending house parties not just the house owners.

And I'm still curious about who's going to pay for enough immunizations to reach herd immunity twice per year.
So far they can't even produce vaccines that fast (though I know factories are being built that will be able to) and by the time fall roll out comes around (the time here where vaccines will supposedly be available for general consumption) the front line workers etc who received one now, will need them again, as so far science has only been able to give 90 days to 4 months (prediction) on how long the antibodies effectively last.......?

Best place to look is the official CDC website.
It is considered approved and experimental because there is not enough data on it yet. So, because it is a pandemic, FDA approved it without all of the standard testing. There are populations which aren't included in the current test groups, and different manufacturers have different test subject qualifications. Kids are not in the test groups and there are different vaccines....so you can't compare apples and oranges (vaccine A, B and C made by different companies differently....it isn't just one vaccine available. So, health care workers are the first guinea pigs, teachers will be up there because school is a priority, along with people in retirement homes, and next wave of tests will be high risk folks. How long did it take the CDC to realize that people were having serious post Covid symptoms? 6 months.....that will be about when we get first accurate reports of side effect and a truer picture of the vaccines effectiveness-is MY guess. For more info, go to CDC website.

They can't understand how complex the issue of lockdown is.
People can't fathom 1% of 7 billion. That's because they can't do the math.....and they don't read the numbers.

The important number right now is what percent of people are testing positive in your area (and I understand the testing % is based on the nasal swab that takes 2-3 days which is more reliable, and not the test which is less reliable where results are usually within 30 min., Watch the trend for number of positive tests in your county, your state, and in the US. Those three numbers will give you local stats, statewide trends, and country trend. Johns Hopkins is tracking the testing data. When vaccine kicks in with enough these numbers should go down, and stay down.

I can really see why folks are really confused and don't understand. I can see why you wouldn't take it seriously, depending on what news you consumed, how busy your life is, whether you are just surviving, what your education level is, and which country that you are in.

Many folks don't know how bad it is and the betrayal they will feel, I imagine will be immense.

The Plague Year (it has a good charting of the years of research that went in to the scientists who helped design one of the vaccines)

If you are not interested in Science, if you don't have friends who are doctors or Scientists, or family who are medicos, it would be hard to sort through the noise. Some folks watch no news at all. If I watched only a certain type of Australian news I wouldn't have the understandings that I have. It seems some Australian journalists aren't able to Google Covid19 and topic and find out what is happening around the rest of the world. They don't seem to be able to watch information that has subtitles. There's very little understanding or reading of scientific journals by mainstream journalists. I watched a journalist asking the dumbest question at one press conference, to ask such a question you would have not watched a single WHO conference (and WHO hasn't done well - there's many criticism of them to be made) but you would have had not read any basic information from late February 2020 onwards, maybe your could get half way through April but it was really basic knowledge. That was two months ago, and that really alarmed me because I didn't have comprehension of how little some people are paying attention to it or understood.

Journalists are writing articles about how our vaccines are being delivered at the end of January - how can they not have enough professional pride to at least google and do a basic check whether Australia is actually producing vaccines? That's a little bit of a worry.

If you only listened to the announcements by our alleged PM, Morrison - you would have heard him say he wasn't letting it stop him from going out to restaurants or seeing friends or going to the Footy. I was livid when he made those comments because of how misleading it would be to other Australians who are not good researchers or passionate about the news & science. And indeed 1 in 4 with Covid19 positive people in Melbourne weren't home when they were visited whilst they were meant to be quarantining. That's why they had the second wave in Melbourne, it kept spreading because of a certain percentage of the population is not thinking it's so serious.

If you an Australian parent, you might not have any idea about how many children have died or are infected in other countries. You wouldn't have seen the shock or disbelief of healthy children dying throughout different countries. Australia's special type of racism means our media doesn't report in depth what is happening to children in Indonesia, Philippines or South Africa.

In Taiwan you are safe. 7 deaths 815 infections. They had a Pandemic Office that was set up after SARS. It had 16 years to prepare. Health messaging was not undermined by political posturing. Adults & kids were given masks by the government each week. There was an app provided to track down masks with how many masks still available at the shop. Testing occurred on planes. Their cleaners walking around had better PPEs than many medicos in Western countries. Health came first. Ironically their economy grew by 1.6% in contrast to many places that kept open for the 'economy'. All my friends with family in Taiwan are not at all worried about them. Australia's special type of racism meant that there were debates about masks, ignoring our Asian neighbours research.

At certain points we considered not being in quarantine as much due to the lack of spread in Australia, and my friend who is high up in health told me to not stop wearing masks yet. I have been really particular about not getting it and not spreading it. But I have been extremely lucky, if I had been immersed in full time teaching I wouldn't have had the time to look into it.

It is overwhelming the bullshit noise that some folks are spurting forth. I feel for people. I am very lucky. I am highly skilled at research.

One woman I know took her daughter to see her specialist who told her, he never expected to see them, that they thought they would do a teleconference, and to never bring her back, and to keep her separate from the other children in their household. So that household split in two - that child's heart condition means they won't survive even asymptomatic Covid19. What the medical families are doing with their children and family members with pre-existing conditions is interesting. What richer families or upper middle class families are doing is telling. I don't think just rich people should be able to keep their kids and family members safe.

There were articles about the heart damage in April but it's with time we now know more.
Post-COVID syndrome severely damages children's hearts. 'Immense inflammation' causing cardiac blood vessel dilation

The impacts on mental health and nutrition are watch this space.

Currently we have spread of the virus in NSW, and they haven't advocated the use of masks (which enabled Taiwan to not have to lock down). There's exemptions to the quarantine by rich, famous and sporting folks. They didn't lock down and they are allowing the cricket to go ahead which is shear madness so today I have stopped paying attention because of the mind numbing stupidity. ***runs around gesticulating wildly***

***lies on the ground miming strangling herself***

Australia has had two decades of running science and CSIRO down, where they lost 1 in 5 jobs, and the national quarantine was closed down by Abbott, I read the last guy who held that position, talking about when his job was ended. We have an anti intellectual, anti expert focus with Murdoch media, which comes out with some bat shit crazy stuff at times about Covid19. So it muddies the messages and confuses folks. Because people think if it's in the media it's a reasonable position that is "balance". So they think that it isn't that serious.

I do get frustrated and angry but when I think about the information some people have access to, I do feel a bit sorry for them. 65% of Queenslanders are reading and writing at a 5th Grade level. That doesn't mean a high level of critical thinking is happening for them. Murdoch apparently owns 100% of our newspapers, I thought it was 70% but recently I was told I was wrong. Access to education and information is a big factor in how folks are processing the information. Some folks don't seem to understand asymptomatic transmission or the fact you can have serious long term consequences even when you had no symptoms of Covid19.

The people muddying the waters, confusing folks and putting out disinformation? I want to KILL them! Put them in a cannon and fire them into the sun.

At the current rate of vaccination, we will all be vaccinated in 10 years! (Or something crazy like that.) I am hoping that vaccination can accelerate as so many people need to get it in order to even leave home.
It usually takes about a year to produce enough vaccines for most of the planet. We do it every flu season... vaccinating from East to West, usually starting in the Far East, Asia & Pacifica, MiddleEast & Africa, Europe, until finally arriving last in North & South America. As that’s the course the seasonal flu usually travels by... we generally manage to just baaaarely stay ahead of the wave as it advances. A few million doses are scattered around the world at the same time, for high risk populations exposed to say, soldiers returning to America from the Middle East on leave during their flu season, or Asian students studying in Germany, or South African tourists hiking the Andes... and the healthcare workers treating them... to STOMP on localized outbreaks before they can create their own wave of infections. Some always gets out, but it’s like a house fire. Easy to throw a buck of water on a candle. Harder once the curtains go up. Goodnight Irene once it’s in the walls.

The infrastructure is so solidly in place for what nearly always happens, that any time the seasonal flu starts elsewhere? Like mesoamerica? The scientific community freaks the hell out attempting to shuffle things around in order to produce and distribute effectively (including guestimating which direction it’s going to travel. N/S/E/W???

Seasonal Flu (East to West) = apx 12 months to vax the planet.
Wacky Diretional Flus = longer, apx 18 months

This one you can expect to fall somewhere in that range.

Maths saying 10 years are looking at what’s currently in production...which is still in the testing range, in most places, (or not happening at all) rather than the flat out production we’ll see once logistics are worked out.

One might expect less time, since the whole world is working flat out, and one might see less time... but the same way countries were fighting over gloves & masks? We’ll see happening over manufacturing & distribution needs. As, rather than sending all the materials & experts to 1 longitude? We want them sent everywhere. So it will get a bit messy. Because people. Shrug. We should still manage to unf*ck ourselves in reeeelatively short order. I just doubt we’ll do it quick enough to beat our seasonal flu timeline.

I get this..... Here's the sad thing. John's Hopkins University publishes lots of data to keep people informed here in the States but apathy is our enemy. It's the sad truth that while there is a governmental mandate in all states, across the country, we have a d.ck for a president, who will be impeached for his behavior, and who wouldn't wear a mask and be a roll model (the people needed to "see him" he believed....damn narcissist) and he didn't protect the people sooner by believing we had a problem in our country despite the numbers of sick in Europe.

He lost this recent election, and went bananas crazy, and he will be impeached.....and likely go to jail for inciting a mob to intervene in the counting of votes....inciting a mob to threaten our representatives....inciting a mob to destroy federal property.....and he told the crowd to go to the capitol building.........and 4 people died yesterday because they were so stirred up over what they believed to be an unfair election.....our own stupid president is the cause of .4 people dying because of his narcissistic charisma, who made promises to white racisist, and when he lost.....his followers tried to stop government...... His followers didn't wear many masks when they stormed in our capitol. Apathy......is our enemy. Public stupidity our curse.

And yep, we have many Covid-Dopes. We have many people who didn't pay attention in 7th or 10th grade (here that's biology class) to how viruses replicate, and who don't know that they mutate. We already have the newly mutated strain here in US, and it is almost twice as virulent that last years strain. Which means......drum roll.....for those who choose not to read, they don't even know it has mutated first in Europe-and it's here in the States! Recently, they have discovered that if you have had Covid, there is no guarantee 3 months later you will still be immune. The CDC has determined that with the new strain, instead of one person infecting two or three people, one person will infect 4-6 persons.
So what can this mean for everyone. Reports say taking doses of Vitamin D will help to prevent or reduce the severity. I take 50,000 mg weekly via injection. You will see a relative or someone you know die before they get a handle on it....so keep a bubble, wash your hands, take your clothes off and toss in washer after you go out-every day, wash your mask if it's cloth, take vitamin D, and use hand sanitizer, stay away from public places, ........and find fun ways to recreate in isolation, and fun ways to get regular exercise which will help prevent lung problems if you get it anyway......

Here, in the States, we may have mandates for masks, but when the staff in fast food restaurants wear their mask as a bib or a chin rest.......they are breathing all over my food......I don't do fast food anymore.....because they don't follow the CDC rules. It is absolutely ridiculous here, too. I'm sorry to get on a roll.....but this whole thing jacks me up.........stupidity and apathy are a dangerous combination.......and when we have that coming from the top......our own president........no hope. We'll see what the next president has to offer but I don't believe next year will be better.

I have watched the WHO press briefing this morning and one of the things that they have been discussing is the need for access and social justice with making sure poorer and less technology endowed countries get access to vaccines. It's crucial to all our survival.

There are 6 vaccines in use at the moment. And unless every country gets access to the vaccines variants will continue to develop and we will be all at risk. So working co-cooperatively is going to be very important.

In Australia Prof Raina MacIntyre estimates with a vaccine efficacy of 94 or 95%, Australia only needs 66% of the population to be vaccinated for their to be "herd immunity". (if other countries also get access to the vaccines, as their efficacy over multiple mutations is not known yet, though with the current mutations, apparently they still work) but anyway given vaccine hesitancy a 95% efficacy is really important.

I was first "Will they be safe?" then after reading up on them (and pointers from this thread) and how certain researchers and scientists are using their decades worth research & experience and how they work and all the work that came before then I was "I will take any vaccine that comes my way!" but now I want the high efficacy ones, unless it's out of control then I will take anything again.

Reports say taking doses of Vitamin D will help to prevent or reduce the severity. I take 50,000 mg weekly via injection.
Dr John Chapman on YouTube, during his SARS-CoV-2, has been following up on the Vitamin D and he's been discussing that because Black, Brown & First nations people are darker skinned they don't produce as much Vitamin D and that may be a contributing factor towards them being disproportionately getting sick & dying of the virus. (Other than systemic racism and being essential workers without the ability to access the resources to have the privilege to be able to lock down) I was thinking of putting some of his commentary on Vitamin D here. But I have put a lot of information in so I wasn't sure whether to do that.

Even if it turns out to be wrong, as long as someone gets checked for their particular circumstances, by a doctor, it should be fine? I am not a doctor so I can't say.

I bought Vitamin D this week. We will be taking it. I will get B to get his Vitamin D checked next time he goes to the doctor.
Here, in the States, we may have mandates for masks, but when the staff in fast food restaurants wear their mask as a bib or a chin rest.......they are breathing all over my food......I don't do fast food anymore.....because they don't follow the CDC rules.
Some places do it right in Australia, but as you can't be sure, we don't do fast food.

Also because we have run low on money, but the lack of following the rules is most concerning.
It is absolutely ridiculous here, too. I'm sorry to get on a roll.....but this whole thing jacks me up.........stupidity and apathy are a dangerous combination.......and when we have that coming from the top......our own president........no hope.
Mixed media messaging in a country does have adverse effects. Taiwan made it illegal to spread disinformation. The countries without political point scoring have done so much better.

The mixed messages had a profound effect in Australia without many people knowing about it. 1 in 4 Covid19 positive people in Melbourne, Victoria, weren't home when checked on at home. 'You can't pretend you don't have it': One in four Victorians with COVID-19 not at home

How much better would the UK be if there had been a consistent health message from the beginning? Currently 1 in 30 people in London are infected, though in some parts it's 1 in 20. Sadly younger people are being admitted to ICU with the 2020 Kent variant. The nurses are now looking after 3 patients when they would usually look after 1 patient, so those poor people are really up against it.

Grim news: London’s hospitals are less than two weeks from being overwhelmed by covid even under the ‘best’ case scenario, according to an official briefing given to the capital’s most senior doctors this afternoon. Exclusive: London will be overwhelmed by covid in a fortnight says leaked NHS England briefing

We look at the Coronavirus Update (Live): 89,355,919 Cases and 1,922,052 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Pandemic - Worldometer each day. I am now lighting a candle for the lost folks as I had to do something to mark the loss of those souls.

2 days ago in the US +4,100 died.
Yesterday +4,223 died.
+3,351 died today so far.

Brazil is starting to head towards the US numbers. During the WHO briefing today they talked of their concern for Brazil.

WHO dropped multiple balls so there needs to be a critical audit of how they handled the pandemic. It's 75%-65% of the world's population haven't been infected yet so we are really early on in this journey. So far only 15%-25% of the world's population is/has been infected.

We'll see what the next president has to offer but I don't believe next year will be better.
That's really upsetting. To have no faith is a worry.

To be honest I don't have much faith in our politicians but I am trying to be positive. Some of them have been so irresponsible and they are not letting the epidemiology drive the decisions, at times, which is frustrating.

We take a high level of responsibility in my life. We went out this morning. We wore masks. We sanitise. I don't believe the social distancing is enough as a sneeze can travel 8 metres but it's better than nothing. Outdoors is so much better than indoors. But I am very fortunate and privileged to be able to live in lock down. We don't see other people. I cook for some high risk folks. I cheer folks up. I stay as informed as possible but some days I switch it off because it gets too much.

I get this.....
Thank you for saying that. It is soothing to feel heard. I have been needing some soothing.
Here's the sad thing. John's Hopkins University publishes lots of data to keep people informed here in the States but apathy is our enemy.
Apathy is a tremendous impediment.

That hopelessness and helplessness is a terrible legacy to live with. I really struggle with it.
It's the sad truth that while there is a governmental mandate in all states, across the country, we have a... a president,
Our Prime Minister made comments saying he wouldn't let the virus stop him from going to restaurants, out with friends and to the footy. It's not helpful or useful.

Taiwan made it illegal to spread disinformation. If we could have done that here it would have been useful.
didn't wear many masks
We have a neighbour on kidney dialysis and other high risk things so we grab our masks when we see them, which isn't often and they are so grateful.

Our other neighbour is so high risk she isn't allowed to go into hospital for her antenatal checks because of her asthma and I kept my distance when I saw her.
And yep, we have many Covid-Dopes.
Yes it's a worry.
We have many people who didn't pay attention in 7th or 10th grade (here that's biology class) to how viruses replicate, and who don't know that they mutate.
We have some politicians and journalists who obviously haven't done a basic Google.

65% of Queenslanders are reading and writing at a 5th Grade level so are perhaps lacking critical literacy skills, which is a real shame. Thinking skills apparently develop at a slightly older age.
We already have the newly mutated strain here in US, and it is almost twice as virulent that last years strain.
We have a confirmed case here so we have gone into a brief lock down whilst they do contact tracing. Masks have even been mandated in cars so I guess you don't forget to get out of them without it being on.
Recently, they have discovered that if you have had Covid, there is no guarantee 3 months later you will still be immune.
Reinfection has been discussed since Wuhan. Whistle blower doctors came forward about that right at the beginning.

Though apparently it was found in Italy before it was reported in Wuhan, which may change the narrative about the disease. SARS-CoV-2 was circulating in Italy before China recognized its existence

I have read some people saying that it's not the first time you catch it's the problem, and that has been discussed now that it might have spread in Italy first asymptomatically.
The CDC has determined that with the new strain, instead of one person infecting two or three people, one person will infect 4-6 persons.
That's why they are going hard here in Queensland. I am just hoping and praying it's not spreading through NSW.
You've been looking into it and aiming for best practice and the highest level of personal responsibility. That's what we are going for as well. To take the highest level of personal responsibility in our daily lives for not getting it and not spreading it. I know quite a few Australians who have taken this course of action.

Some folks have no choices - they are an essential worker, or they don't have a situation where they can grow a lot of their own food.
