News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I wasn't accounting for every corona virus ever identified & only relating to human beings. :banghead::wtf:
These viruses start in animals. Zoonotic origins of human coronaviruses
They also are researched in animals, with animals, and not just humans.

It's not a study of the human ones here and the animal ones over here and there is no overlap. To understand this virus and how to stop these viruses, one has to deal with their zoonotic origins. Also, animal science is faster, so I would not advocate we ignore it.

It's like asking to study swine flu but ignore the swine part. This coronavirus is essentially bat flu. MERS was camel flu.

Studying animal coronavirus defences is opening route to human treatments

if I understand it correctly the China propaganda is for the Chinese people - not the world. Yes, part of it is deflecting the criticism that they are getting about the virus, so they want to toss it out there for all to see.

But the main purpose is to show the Chinese people that America is failing and their culture can no longer be held up as something to aspire to or follow.

Now, they say, China is a stronger, better, more successful country they can be proud of and the government can use certain "facts" about how we are handling the virus to "prove" it. Plus since they have state run media, it's an easy message to get out, unlike places that have conflicting messages and political agendas. In a way it makes sense. They are fighting back against growing worldwide blame by pointing the attention elsewhere. Just like politicians around the world.

it's going to be interesting to see the worldwide implications because so much of the everyday things we all use to fight the virus come from China - which only reinforces the idea the world needs them more than they need us. Kind of scary. :(

There's a corona virus that causes diarrhea in cattle and I know, for sure, there's a vaccine for that. (Because I've used it.) There are quite a few corona viruses that cause diseases in other species.

There's a vaccine against the feline coronavirus, but I'm not completely sure how effective it is.

Also...take my next comment with caution, this is just an opinion and I haven't researched it in depth, but until now most human coronavirues really didn't cause more than a "common cold", there maybe wasn't a felt "need" or "urgency" to find a vaccine? Both SARS and MERS were managed to be contained and eradicated...

As for the Chinese propaganda video .... let's face it, many if not most countries do those kind of things in one form or another (*cough* China-Virus *cough* ), maybe not as blatantly obvious, but ...same same...but different...but still same. (and let's be honest, this video has a lot of truth to it, like it or not - hard to swallow pills and such ;) )

I fail to see the point in this ongoing biggering and obsession with any one given country. Let childish politicians do it - let the rest of the world focus on the task at hand, which is a pandemic and it's ramifications.

As for a possible coming war... we have an election year and wars have proven in the past to be successful in keeping people in office. Folks tend to not change their elected representatives in times of war. I've been saying since November 2016 that probably at one point or another we're gonna have another war.

As Trump Pushes Theory Of Virus Origins, Some See Parallels In Lead-Up To Iraq War

It's been proven from all kinds of different sites and Intel reports, that the virus is not lab-made, yet he keeps pushing this narrative. The longer you keep repeating a lie, at some point it becomes "truth" - it already is for many of his base. Social media is overflowing with all sorts of conspiracy theories...

I'm really struggling to be honest. They may remove the state of emergency over here(Serbia), which would mean all frozen administrative stuff will restart(needing to renew documents, pay debts and so on) whereas the use of public transport is only for those employed(self-employed not counting) with personolised bus card. Meaning although places will start reopening and I'll need to take certain actions, my only way of going around the city will be by taxi. That also makes any socializing still hard. There is still curfew, although it might be 22pm from tomorrow which is still much better than 18pm. Also, they might give me 30days for renewing my visa here, whereas, no one has confirmed when the border will open for me to be able to go home(and for personal reasons I need longer time before applying for visa again). This whole constant state of not knowing what comes next, the way it was in the beginning of all this, it really setting me off.
How's everyone else doing?

Our lockdown is meant to be loosened tomorrow, there's a whole disagreement between all four heads of the UK on when/how. But big bojo is in charge so ?

I think it's a really stupid time to loosen lockdown, UK is now worst hit area in Europe (30,000 deaths), for context, USA has like 70,000 deaths, but is um.. quite a bit larger as a country than us.

I'm so, so frustrated. Scotland (% of population wise) is worse hit than England, with Glasgow having highest death rate in Scotland. Everyone at work is starting to get pure stressed out and snappy with each other. And with everyone else ? honestly, this whole country (UK) is f*cking everything up everywhere. And I'm so frustrated with it.

My landlady just approached me with some of the conspiracy theories (the ones where this is all just a big ploy for the various global governments to control us and our lives). It's easy enough to just ignore it when it's random people on social media. But how do you navigate it if it's actual people around you. I have a few more candidates in my circles, so does hubby, who tend to buy into conspiracy theories - already do.

"It's scary and real". The conspiracy theory. Not the virus.
Her words.

Ugh.

Here is what other people in WA state are doing. Not us, of course. I was going to post the link but it was an email from the Governor. He was saying that having Covid parties (like they had chicken pox parties in the 50s and 60s) to get healthy people sick so we develop herd immunity is not safe and we don't even know if you acquire immunity after you have it. They really need to be told that? That puts others at more risk too.

Don't argue with it / try to disprove it... Play a curious observer. Asking questions that will lead them to conclude it's bogus and doesn't make sense with ordinary reality as they know it, instead of outright telling them X is better explainable by Y.

And never attack their value as a rational person / sane one, even when the thing is bugf*ck nuts, because then it becomes about them (and deeper needs for defense of personhood) & makes that belief even more clinged to.

Aiming for recognizing of day to day issues they *actually* deal with can help too.

I mean sure, governments are soo trying to murder the planet...
But I thiink the bigger problem is you land ma'am are upset the bank didn't clear multiple tenants' fees right, yet, and that provokes very real existential insecurities

The conspiracy clinging is just a wrap up for something real people are avoiding.

If they were heavily into it it would be long before corona and those types, even in conspiracy circles, don't last long... Because they have far too deep basic functioning troubles and multiple forced hospitalizations to mind & colossal debt and/or live homeless already than just the conspiracies.

More tragic human stories, than anxiety trying to make sense of changed world situation.

Of countries where people have been infected, here are 5 doing well:

1: Vietnam.
With a population of 93 million, there have been only 268 infections and no deaths. How? By isolating anybody who was infecting, then quarantining anyone they had come into contact with in military camps. Plus, six whole towns and suburbs were entirely closed and quarantined.

2: New Zealand
There are now zero new daily cases of infection, and the total number of deaths was 20, achieved by one of the strictest lockdowns in the world.

3: South Korea
Starting out as one of the worst affected countries, South Korea turned things around by widespread, and even drive-through, testing available for everybody free of charge. Anybody found positive OR SYMPTOMATIC, test or not, was immediately isolated, so that there was no need to quarantine the whole population.

4: Slovakia
With measures almost identical to those in the Czech republic (most places closed, masks mandatory in public, quarantine after arriving from abroad), Slovakia has the lowest number of covid-19 death in Europe: only 20 people have died. Epidemiologists, though, remain confused about why the number is so low, compared to other countries (including the Czech republic) that followed the same measures.

5. South Africa
Extensive testing, tracing, and isolating.

New Zealand Has 20 COVID-19 Deaths. Vietnam Zero. How They Succeeded

Meanwhile, the United States:
1.2 million infected 72,000 dead via a method of chaos and utter circus.

New Zealand and Australia are in talks to create a travel bubble because both countries have very low infection rates. But right now, neither will open their borders inside or outside. PM Adern put it simply when she told a press conference on Tuesday last that it will not happen until it is established that they will neither export or import infected persons.

The more we test apparently well & uninfected or perhaps asymptomatic people ... the more cases we are coming across. Testing is the key to determine the true numbers. We've had a couple of clusters that have become difficult to manage & resulted in numerous deaths. Elderly care homes are particularly hard to manage.

I think it's entirely possible that when the US insists the virus came from a lab they are right. But it may also have come from bats. They were studying the virus, derived from bats in virology clinics?? Idk different news sources say different words. They're edging away from the 'constructed by man' words. It's possible that whilst working with the virus in a lab, it jumped into the wild. That would be an accident but nevertheless it may explain how it did jump species.

Also, animal science is faster, so I would not advocate we ignore it.

^Wasn't advocating we ignore. In my original post I was referencing corona viruses in humans. Like the common cold & there are other corona viruses that don't present a big problem to humans who are otherwise healthy.

Bats are the original reservoir/source for corona viruses - I think that's fairly well substantiated (see link). How they jump to any other species, including humans helps us understand how it is mutating and what effect it has on us. Oh & of course how we fight it!! :)
