I'm getting a bit desperate- I use Effexir and 5HTP currently- but feel like shit, and simply cannot get any energy/interest/life back in me. My panic attacks ceased largely - but I'd rather have them back than be here to be brutally honest.

My Pyschologist desperately wants me to try some treatment that uses intravenous adminitration of wide spectrum minerals, vitamins, supplements etc- apparently flooding the system every 3-4 weeks. She has stated she's read about it for PTSD'ish conditions recently.

Now...my old pre-condition self would have laughed whole-heartedly at this before.... but now, having few options, I wondered if any one has tried this? Its 200 bucks a pop, and just on the off chance someone can call bullshit..... I'd be $200 more appreciative.

Thanks

I'd say you should be careful of a psychologist that recommends physical treatments that they just "read about recently ". I'm sure she meant well and the publication might've had valid research. Sometimes things that help a lot of people, dont have any intention of letting you be one of them!

Vitamins and minerals arent all good things though , not in all amounts all the time for every person. I say this as someone who has gotten really sick from all kinds of supplement and vitamin shots to deal with MS flare ups.

Before you just read up a little and start making 200 appts. ask your GP or any Med. doctor about the list of vits and mins in the IV and what may be the adverse effects. If you have impaired liver function or kidney trouble for example, sometimes even regular doses can give you side effects if given intravenously.Be particularly cautious of herbal supplements.

Thanks coco- some of my concerns also, as far as vitamins in high dosage. My therapist is great, but I think she's concerned as regular benzo's or SSRI's aren't working for me. I feel worse every year- so she's really trying to find options. i forgot- my bad, but she did refer it partially due to results from another PTSD client she sees. But yeah ....200 bucks and homeopathic or natural medicine makes me wonder, even though I've learned to keep an open mind.

I like coco's response. You need to know what is in the IV / medications. Found 10 min of EMDR helpful on you tube and deep breathing and grounding. I don't recommend jumping into any new medical treatment. Usually it takes a year before all the problems that people have been having get revealed. Hope you feel some relief somehow!

Hey K9. Have you checked that you can use an SSRI and 5 HTP at the same time? I have heard that they are contraindicated.
As for vitamins, I believe its a good idea to support the body and nervous system as any stress puts extra strain. As for intravenous, I don't know, never heard of that for PTSD.
I found SSRIs useless and side effects horrible. A very low dose of seroquel ( I take 12.5 mg) at night for sleep and anxiety. But ya, no magic cure.
I also take herbs to support my nervous system, again, no magic cure. Specifically Ashwaganda, hops, rodiola mixed together. Its about $20. I take fish oil and b vitamins. But ya, ultimately the brain must rewire.
I am going to try neurofeedback as it was amazing for my daughter who had severe ADHD. We shall see.

Funny...but the new GP doctor told me to take 5HTP and the effexir.... I'll definitely check into that...I didn't think it was feeling so shit hot to be honest.

Maybe the SSRI's are bad for me. I've taken them so bloody long to avoid panic attacks, and depression- I was scared to not take them, became habit? but maybe that's an idea to try to wean off and see if it's better with out?

To be honest after all these years, panic attacks as unpleasant as they are no big suprise, and I have the emergency benzo's or Diazapam for that, but I feel the worst I've felt in a yer or two now....so something isn't working.

Thanks for feedback!

@Ka-9 - Effexor isn't an SSRI. It's an SNRI. They have a different mechanism. However, the problems are nearly the same - what you need to avoid with 5HTP and any SS- or SN- RI is too much seratonin. Seratonin syndrome can make you very, very sick.

I take effexor and wellbutrin, and for me, it's a good combination. The Wellbutrin definitely counteracts the sluggishness that comes with effexor (if you are one to get sluggish from it).

Wellbutrin is basically in it's own class. It's often used as an adjunct to other anti-depressants. Ask your doctor about it.

Thanks for that joey....I forgot the difference. I always wondered what wellbutrin did. It dawned on me I've been on anti-depressants for 8+ years, but I have severe sluggishness, headaches, and a real lack of interest/drive that got worse.

Its so freaking confusing to try and figure the causes/effects now. I'd like to try and eliminate things one by one to see what helps, what hurts.

Get rid of the HTP first - would be my very strong (and also I am totally not a doctor) advice. Effexor is difficult to discontinue. What's your dose, by the way?

And, if your doctor did not suggest this - you need to have a complete blood panel done if you've not had it done in the last 6 or so months - the whole kit and caboodle. Make sure you are ruling out the possible problems there.

@Ka-9 I was wondering something on my break here, the 5HTP and an SSRI together but it looks like that got covered. I forget Im in a place where most of us are on drugs.

Amino acid therapy as a neurotransmitter boost can be good though.
I have had huge improvements myself in the past both mentally and physically with amino acids, the combinations and dosages are usually pretty high.
I had great results with carnitine, glutamine and tyrosine. Aminos usually need to be taken for 3 to 12 months to get a good boost going in your brain, but if you take them too long they can start having a reverse effect. Sort of like SSRI's also.

There are a lot of articles on the net about that- most are selling something and some not credible doctors and weight lifters.

To get around that type in 'scholarly articles about amino acids and brain chemistry ' . I look at easy to read versions and then fact check them with that stuff when it comes to ingesting anything new.

Thanks for asking that question today. I forgot about amino's because I've been off them a while, but I should start again, I really feel like crap lately too! They really had a huge effect on me in a positive way.

I didn't find anything miraculous result wise with the 5HTP TBH, so I tend to agree. For effexir I'm on 75 1 x daily, highest ever was 112.5 (broken up 2x daily) but I requested it down as I was afraid of getting dependant on higher and higher dosages.

I know I should have blood work.... I'm resistant as I hated the intitial years where I was convinced I had everthing from brain cancer, to beri beri after trying to self diagnose, but it's due I know.

Next stop is copiuous amounts of pot and cheeto's.

thanks for that- I'd prefer to try a natural helathy supplement program anyways- amino's seem interesting. I was even open to test therapy if it had promise.

I'm just realizing I may not be seeing the forest for the tree's so to speak, by being on the SSRI or SNRI's
