Gender fluid here @Mal Content. The intolerance of which resulted in some trauma for me and many others. However, (((hugs))) please perhaps encourage her to become familiar enough for her to do her own list categories - as political correctives vary country to country and among the community as well.

FYI - Some people may not come forward as there is much controversy. In the USA (for example) the community is the highest target at this time for hate crimes according to the FBI.

Thanks, R4M! I know things are MUCH more difficult for non-traditional people in the States. That's one of the biggest policy differences between our two countries - ours is the opposite of a melting pot, we celebrate and encourage diversity. The rights of all non-binary (thanks @Ronin) people have been guaranteed.

I volunteered to ask for input here because of our wonderfully diverse membership. My daughter may have been indulging me.

Hey, Mal, it's great that you're asking our community! Sadly, many kids are bullied, abused, run away, are thrown out of their home, and/or are exploited due to their gender expression and/or sexual orientation -- all potential Criterion A categories for PTSD.

The only option I would additionally suggest for gender is genderqueer, at least that's a term used by some young people in our community (I think someone already suggested genderfluid.) For sexual orientation does she include "Questioning"? I'll ask our Outlaw group (the LGBTQQI group for law students) and their faculty advisor if they have anything to add.

Here's some questions re survey design:

1) Does the survey make it clear whether someone who checks "female" or "male" is actually cisgender, or seeks to define what she means by certain terms? [cisgender = identity matches biology]

2) What does she think about options like Other (please explain/describe) or Decline to State? Just curious.

3) Is her distribution limited to her school, or Canada, or does she need assistance getting the word out once she's ready for her survey to go live?

Good going, Mama, for raising a Superkid! Proud of her and you.

Apologies for butting in but best damn name for queer law students ever. :D

Back to topic -

And yep. I'd put the sex/gender difficult category as sex: male / female / intersex, gender: male / female / intergender / non-binary / other / genderqueer / genderfluid / questioning.

Maybe leave out the cis / trans status part altogether, since if you're listing any other gender options than male & female it comes commonly associated as falling 'on the trans spectrum' and is assumed, plus early in the process many trans people don't quite realize they are, just know there's 'something wrong with them' & how they feel about their body.

& When asking orientation it might be just easier to leave it an open ended question, as 'attracted to / interested in relationships with __' (fill in according to preference.), depending if you want these identity boxes there or are more after experiences themselves.

Aw, Lola, thank you! I appreciate the compliment. :)

She and I were just talking about genderqueer last night. We both looked to the definition, and neither of us could even define it! As far as I could tell, it was simply an umbrella term for non-traditional.

Yeah, she does want an *other* (with comments) checkbox because she doesn't want to overwhelm the respondents. This questionnaire is solely for her university, but if it goes well, she may apply for a grant to continue as part of her post-grad work.

My kids tease me. I named each of them androgynous names to make things easier for them just in case, and I kept the toy workbench beside the toy kitchen. My oldest daughter tells people that I was practically challenging their gender.

Here, elementary school children are encouraged to go with whatever they identify with, and we have hate speech laws that protect them. There will always be assholes, but in school, at least they tend to be shunned by the other students.
