Need advice badly.
If you meet people who are obviously dealing with selfworth issues, need attention, need to make themselves superior to others, how do you not react?

I come across this person, who appears to be strong, and there is this tention between us. Its a Like-dislike thing. She needs to represent herself in a certain way, I do that as well. I feel though inferior to her. There is this strange wanting to impress her. Make her think I am intelligent. I just dont understand what I am doing there. Why do I need her approval? As if she is powerful.

Today, I am going to meet her again. My therapist asked to shift that focus to someone else. I have this urge to show her "Huh I dont need your attention, I am enough for myself"

How can I detach, not project?

Whats happening here?

Confused

I really need some advice before I meet a group of people today. I just cant stand weakness. No WEAKNESS, no I must appear strong. No emotion driven behaviour. Urghhhhh

I hope someone has advice to drag me out of this spiral?!!!!!!!!!!!

I have thought about this for a long time, the triggering has to come from somewhere.

I just dont come to an answer. No.
She is similar to me actually. Not all aspects, but a few

It could be the similarity, but I still need to refocus.

Oh, this might hit the nail on the head! I feel this way when I'm around people that are "like" me in some ways. Not all of the time, but sometimes. I will admire their strength, then get annoyed with the qualities I dislike most about myself.

If she is having "self worth" issues, do you think maybe you do too, and that's what's really bothering you? Maybe for that, the best thing is not to focus on her, but love yourself. I don't "know" you, but I've "seen you" around here, and I think you're a great person! I think we are each our own worst critics. I know for me, when I see someone that has to be the center of attention, I give them the same as everyone else. I don't give them "more" but I also don't give them "less", because then you may be doing it out of spite.

My suggestion is to just be yourself and have a good time. You are intelligent, so no need to prove it. Especially if the other people there know you too. You really don't need her approval. You don't need anyone's approval but your own. I think that's where you need to shift your focus - on letting yourself be impressed by you.

I know I get "accused" of being strong a lot. Both on here and in real life...but I don't think I'm any stronger or weaker than anyone else. I'm just me. I'm somewhat intelligent and at least moderately educated. I'm also a type A (plus) personality, so I tend to be right in the middle of many conversations. But, for me, it's because I like to talk....but I like to hear what everyone has to say too. So if she's anything like that, I doubt she's doing any of this to be "superior", but maybe she just wants people to like her too. Maybe she really likes everyone.

If this is the case, than I doubt she is looking down on anyone. I know I don't! I try to find the things I like most about people and try like hell to avoid seeing the stuff I don't like. Maybe she is intimidated by you! Maybe if you two really are alike, she's also worried about making you like her...you thinking she's intelligent! Maybe that's why she tries so hard.

At any rate, forget about her and have fun for yourself! Be the center of your own attention!! I really hope you have a great time!

I thank you, for your encouraging words. I feel a bit OK than I did an hour ago. I dont like to face humans at times, its just painful but I will try to stay present without wanting too much control.
I have seen you here too! Nice to meet you Nae Nae75!

I try to get distance (emotional/mental where physical's not doable) and then look at what I can learn from them.

Or basically answer if that something that's setting me off about them can't be something to use for self improvement.
But it takes time. Years, with some, and with some traits.

I have similar relationships, with some people that seem to know how to exploit someone to get the superior reinforcement they crave. objectively Watching it being done to someone else it occurs to me that they are using a shortcut to get their rewards, rather than being a better, smarter, more honest and devoted to the best person, they have learned how to fake it and with whom the fakery works.

I kind of lived out my own parable that I try to keep in mind when I find myself dealing with these people.

I have a neighbor that is a member of a local family that as a whole believes they are superior to everyone else. They have to maintain it to keep the family pride alive. my neighbor has decided that he will maintain his superiority over me by dumping his lawn debris just over the property line on my land. It might be because he has seen my dogs "use" his land and this is his way of evening the score, I don't know or care. I see the debris, but I don't react and give him the pleasure of knowing I see it by saying something or pushing it back or even tilling it under. I choose to ignore it because if that is how he scores his points I am willing to let him have the low ground. I have several acres here, room for him and all of his family to dump lawn clippings before it bothers me at all. I let it be. I feel sorry for him, and move on. I do try to keep my dogs on my land, but he hasn't said anything to me about it and it is no big deal if my dog uses his land the same way the deer and coyotes and 10000 birds use his property or mine, in my opinion. If it is, he should come see a man about a dog. Thats what men do.

I try to see the parallels between my relationship with my neighbor and the people I see trying to find people who will validate their weakly supported superiority at work, in life in general. Give up the low ground, there is plenty of it. We are all just trying to get through today and into tomorrow, a little dog waste or yard debris on one side of an imaginary line or another doesn't amount to anything worth dealing with, the deer and the coyotes and the 10000 birds don't care and they will all be here tomorrow too, same as me.

Many people that I come in contact with on a daily basis are also dealing with self-worth issues, and feeling needy at times. I have to seriously check myself to see if I am in chameleon mode and trying to people please them. In hindsight, because of the trauma and extreme abuse, I never developed a core self, core beliefs, self-awareness, self-love, nor any sense of self. And people-pleasing and catering to the whims and interests of others was all I knew to do because of the God-shaped vacuum hole inside of me that I could've driven a high-masted ship through.

Now, after tons of therapy, and now emdr therapy, if I am not feeling a connection with a person over a period of time, I try so much to be honest with myself and protect my self and pull back, especially if they are becoming verbally abusive and toxic.

A therapist told me long ago that low self-esteemed people in their futile attempt to elevate themselves above others try to diminish those around them through either an attitude of superiority or an attitude of neediness, and their then projecting victimization and neediness status onto others around them. And I have done both in my past.

Now, what I know is this - that ignoring my conscience telling me something is amiss with a person is caustic to my well-being. And I do not dwell well in denial, anymore. Lived there numb and shut down for most of my life. Now, here inside of me dwells a consciousness that will help try and guide me (only when I am willing to listen) in/through all of my relationships.

An abusive female friend comes into my field of vision again: I went to mailbox this a.m. after my walk around our fall-colored pretty neighborhood with the fall leaves and colors, etc. and pulled out from mailbox a rather nice and pricey Happy Thanksgiving card from a once upon a time (last year and for the four-five years prior) once beloved female friend. She had seriously demeaned me to my face in a covert manner - on only a handful of occasions (yet lethal doses of hate and cruelty coming from her mouth about me) and back then I nearly succumbed to full and complete victim status, until I realized after questioning her about her past history (family, etc.) that she was NOT being honest about her own private personal past issues (which were affecting her marriage intimacy (IN-TO-ME-SEE) and was hurting all of her relationships (self-admitted) due to her past trauma.

So, I pulled away from her, for I cannot change anyone nor fix anyone and I try and keep focus on self, and am not perfect by any means at this; and I refused and told her so - to allow her/anyone to ever treat me like past abusers had treated me - like dung anymore. I've had enough. (Only caused my mind to question my existence here when I've allowed others to use me as an emotional and at times verbal punching bag)

If I have to change and wear masks to effectively become closer to someone, anyone too high of a price to my psyche (core) to pay. That bank vault is empty. I will again lose my ability to be honest with myself. No more masks, no more lies about who I am in relationship to others, and no more hypocritical pseudo friendships. I want to be as candid and real as possible.

For all of my life I hid behind alcohol (I called it socializing) weed, risky behaviors, sexual promiscuity (acting out), food abuse, and then cutting, overdosing because I just could not find a comfortable and real me. And I change daily in my likes, interests, etc. Who am I, what do I like and not like.

Why am I so uncomfortable being alone with myself. And also isolating and going too far with being alone with self? Questions I am working on and learning about myself in healthier relationships, where I do not lean too heavily on friends to complete me and give me answers to above questions.

I have learned and continue to learn so much about me, by letting go of my masks, and mim-icking others' likes and interests. I have not arrived and yet I continue to try and for first time in my life - self-discover who am I in relationship to those around me.

Taking the low ground to prevent further contention is what I also try to do. It's not about winning, although it never has been with/for me. When I am over-reacting to someone else's behavior, I must look deep inside and try and determine (only try) and this is my journey (not destination, yet) why am I exhibiting and/or experiencing such hurt feelings, or negativity from what someone else has said or is doing around or in front of me. I am grateful for your post. Low ground - I don't like to fight or become confrontational, however, I will assert and articulate my needs more now than previously - none at all.

I was dying inside, and now there is a little teeny, tiny light inside of me, that I hope will become brighter and brighter, as I learn more to not react to others, (not there yet!) and try oh so hard try to keep focus on self when in company of others' superiority (which sometimes comes disguised as inferiority ex: someone on this forum said I was "lecturing" her. Hmmm?

No, I am very nakedly honest and sincere, and we are world's apart in our recovery, and I wish her all of the best! Hope my sharing helps. Only sharing. Still in learning process, and until I die I will be... Jade.
