Learning That It's Okay

In the 18 years since I got away from my abuser I have lived in a personally inflicted war zone, feeling that I must put one foot in front of the other and hide any trouble I have. I did this by completely dissociating from any stressor and paying the price when no one was around for me to fall apart. After recently being released from a voluntary psychiatric in-treatment program, I am learning that it's okay to not be able to handle everything and to ask someone else to step in and help me. I know I still have a long hard road, but this is a pretty big victory for me.

Greetings @Towanda! And I love your pseudonym Towanda! I say Towanda a lot in my personal life, after watching Fried Green Tomatoes, with Kathy Bates. Love this movie and believe Bates played an outstanding role in it. That said, may I please be the first person to welcome you to this life-breathing, giving, and saving forum!

You will find so many members here that will relate in some similar manner or completely to your trauma, when/if you are able to speak about trauma-related issues or if you just want to read posts by members for members and begin to learn all that is myptsd.com. @Towanda, it is no secret that I love this website. I recently was in Kroger in checkout lane, and shared with woman about this forum, and she said she had been domestically severely abused and that she would check out this website, herself.

Thanks Jades. I've been lurking for a few weeks before deciding to join. If you loved the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, I highly recommend the book. My current service dog is too small to do some of the tasks I need so next year we are going to get a German Shepherd to train. If we get a female we are going to name her Idgie.

Yes, Idgie Thorogood! I too love movie Fried Green Tomatoes! Kathy Bates, Mary-Louise Parker, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Cicely Tyson just to name a few were outstanding actors in this movie. Just a few of my favorite actors, so many. Good to lurk, and I say TOWANDA! Righter of Wrongs, Queen Beyond Compare, Amazon Woman! Yes, love this movie. You picked a very colorful and liberating pseudonym, and I really like the name Idgie for your new service dog (german shepherd). Good for you :) I can imagine that feels really great and will be a rat help for you going foreward too. Knowing that sometimes it is not only safe but helpful to be able to share vulnerability.
