Didn't we collectively write this?

Good morning all! I fell hard last night and still had bad dreams... I have the best wife ever! She handled me in a way that really makes me want to do so much better! One day at a time, right? I will not fail today!

Some wives shoulder some of the burden we carry. They're the one's to hold close because they're hard to find.

If it were only one day at a time. For us, it's one minute at a time. We call it baby steps.

Ya got that one right Sarg!

I got me keeper (what she see's in me only God knows) and I ain't throwing her back!

Just celebrated our 45 anniversary yesterday (One Day at A Time). Me bride could write a book about the Jekyll & Hyde (the Beast) the lies beneath the surface. The frigging Military should give spouses who survive along with us a medal with a "V" for valor.

Greetings!

I've been retired for 4 years now. I served 24 years in the Navy and retired as a Master Chief (E-9). I spent most of my last 6 years in the Middle East. I was stationed in Bahrain where I rode Pakistani ships. Then did 2 tours boots on ground in Iraq. The first tour was 24 months and 10 days. The second one was only 6 months.

I'm recently married at 47. Been divorced for 12 some odd years. And, I have to seriously take a look at my self. I know I've had issues that others didn't since returning. But, for the sake of leadership, I stuffed my feelings and only let the hurt out when I was alone. Which steadily became more and more. I was very good at it. Everyone believed I'm a happy go lucky sorta guy. But, it's hard to hide from someone who lives with you.

I just want to read what others have gone through and how they are and aren't coping if you know what I mean. I have to admit that I'm still leery of saying that I have any disorder because of the stygma that goes with it. But, that's my ego talking and it needs to be deflated... LOL

Thanks for letting an old squid ramble!

Michael
Ahoy!

Good to see more and more of us Squids washing ashore here. I was a Firecontrollman, first or second class depending on which discharge papers you read. (got frocked the day before they assigned me to USS Backyard). Played CIWS and RAM, did a metric shit tonne of VBSS when we should have been partying for various UNITAS deployments.

I see you mention trouble sleeping. As you were a skimmer too, one thing that helps me sleep at night is background noise. A quiet ship means big trouble, as you well know. I run an aquarium and or fountain in my assorted sleeping areas at home, and use a white noise generator program on my laptop when I'm on the road for work. (Some hotels are just too damned quiet in North Dakota...) It ain't no cure, but it helps.
Hang in there, and keep your stick on the ice.

Keep her informed about PTSD, the more she knows the better. There is a great video that my wife got a hell of a lot out of.

It was made by an Aussie for Vietnam Veterans, but everyone I know says it's so to the point.

Hey, Chief. Welcome. You are in the right place. Sometimes we are frisky but mostly -- not. Let'er rip when you have to.

And we all do at times.

Thanks Jimmy! You're right, the more she knows, only helps out in the long run. And, thanks for your advice Sludge. Yeah, I was stationed on 5 ships. When they went quiet during the night, everyone popped wide awake... LOL

One of the scariest moments on an aircraft carrier is when the reactor does an emergency shut down and the 15 min to an hour or few before the emergency generators come online. The boat is usually a constant source of noise with loud ventilation, loud machinery, aircraft engines running, aircraft launches and recovery, then... near deafening silence as we are dead in the water with almost everything else (aircraft) shut down for safeties sake. The boat rocks differently in the waves also when it's dead in the water.

I often wondered what it would sound like if all four turboprops quit at the same time. When we had to feather one because of an engine warning light or something, the whole aircraft shook and it would get much quieter on that side. See! There are times when very noisy and heavy vibration are good things.
