Not a bad cookie Dan. 50mpg is nice. Reviews say its an affordable well made car with low cost of repairs and shitty acceleration. Sounds like a ford. (I am a Chevy guy) Oh and a BIT of a fan of old IH Scout 800's.

it's not mine mate, someone is parked outside my house. I drive a Citreon C3 picasso; 0-60mph in just under an hour. It has its purpose! Scout looks fun.

I used to buy old non running rusted out scouts from local farmers in Colorado. I bought 18 of them over a 5 year period. 3 I was able to retitle and get running and sold them on Ebay.
The other 15.. I kept one, the other 14 were parted out. I tore them down to the bare frame. Everything came off and was stored and advertised for sale. I junked the rusted crap metal and that paid for the cost of buying the scout from the farmer. I sold parts to guys all over the states and even other countries. Made a boatload of money doing it. Had a blast. Even the bolts that held the scouts together were valuable. It was something else. Made some friends from it and it was a good form of therapy as well.
I like having hobbies that make money.
Used to gold sluce as well. that paid shit but it was a lot of fun. play with dirt and make money....winner!

Welcome to the forum, interesting choice of username Ephemeral.

Your among friends here still a couple or three ol VN vets like us (Navy 1965/66 Danang) here. Lots of good stuff to read and learn how we each deal with the beast on our own terms. Try to keep an open mind we're a diverse bunch; all here for the common cause - a daily reprieve from the symptoms and onslaught of the beast.

All the things I would wish my PTSD was/is. But, that not being the case, I'm in for the long haul.

I do not use any of the medications offered by the VA. I have my reasons for that attitude

I'm sure you do - your not alone.

Ephemeral, please respect our introduction policy and be more thorough. Also, we have long standing members that know this policy and will call you on it, nothing personal, we just have to protect our forum, of which you are currently a part of, and I am sure you can appreciate that. Thank you.

To start with, I agree with what you say. I would add that I think the phenomena called PTSD is not a disease as such, nor is it mental illness (although it can become so), and the fact that many in our society see it as such, bodes ill for veterans as a whole.

Everyone has an opinion mate, just don't force it on others. PTSD makes physiological changes to the brain, this is proven. We are all veterans and have all been diagnosed with A MENTAL ILLNESS according to the DSM V. Realistically though, and in 'my opinion', PTSD is just an umbrella term to encompass a variety of things, such as:

1. All of us have gone through a boot camp of some sorts where they rip you out of the civilian world and teach you to think military. You operate by a schedule, everything is uniform, you learn to kill.
2. They teach you to operate in small teams and rely on those teams to save your life.
3. They teach you to watch your back and cover your arcs so you don't end up dead.
4. They send you overseas for long periods away from 'normal society' where you see first hand how nasty humans can be by witnessing death and destruction up close and personal. You may also be called upon to pull the trigger or press the button, or you may be required to try and give aid to your fellow man who have been exposed to this. You may also witness your best friends evaporated in a blast or have their legs blown off.

Then they send you home without any real debriefing and expect you to function in society

I didn't come here to cause people to become upset. I didn't come here to start fights with people's conceptualizations of PTSD. If there is only one allowable interpretation of PTSD accepted here, and other thought on PTSD that may be at odds, to some degree, with the prevailing interpretation is not to be examined rationally and fairly, then perhaps I need to keep my thoughts to myself, and simply read without meaningful interaction.

I don't mean to disparage anyone, veteran or non-veteran, who has PTSD. I have been through enough demonization because of my own PTSD, that I would not want to visit this upon another.

You say you didn't come here to upset people or start fights, well what you have to understand is this. We are one of the best forums on the internet when it comes to helping our international brethren. The problem we have though is we have all types of whack jobs who come on here to cause trouble. We have university students wanting first hand stories to help with their studies, we have 'trolls' who come on here to cause trouble, we have wannabe's who for some strange reason want to pretend they have PTSD when they don't, and lastly (maybe I missed a few), we have so called experts who think they have miracle cures for PTSD. So that is why you might get some animosity from the guys and gals on here.

So it's simple, how about you get to know a few of the guys and gals on here first, or just come straight out and tell us exactly what you want.

You can make a man into a soldier but you can't reverse that process the same goes with PTSD.
PTSD comes in all forms which like it or not we have to deal with it.
The highs & the lows & trying to come to terms with every day life getting help through therapy taking pills that may or not work.
The hardest thing for myself was admitting i have problems better later than never none of my family know i have it but i think it won't come as a suprise to them when they find out.
Some times when i get upset and angry when I'm out whether it be on the bus/tube or in a shop and i start to lose my cool and i apologies for my actions i wish just once i could explain I've got PTSD but the mentality of people here in the UK means the moment you mention it your treated like a leppa so apart from therapy i have to cope and deal with it the best part alone.

?........ but the mentality of people here in the UK means the moment you mention it your treated like a leppa so apart from therapy i have to cope and deal with it the best part alone.

I have had people in my unit walk right by me like they did not know me....friends that I have served with overseas, people that "never saw any enemy activity while on shift so no one had to die whenever they were working". cooties ptsd cooties, they didn't want to get it I guess......f*ckers.

There's always been this stigma about 'mental illness', there I said it. Like somehow we're supposed to be able to fix it ourselves. Hell, don't they think we would if we could. It's sad to hear that it hasn't changed much in my lifetime.

i wish i could talk to my grandfather he served with the 8th army in north Africa but he passed away in 1982 and my grandmother passed away while i was on desert storm. they are always in my thoughts.
