My RBL case worker the first thing he wrote down on his paper work was ptsd and he told me about combat stress.
He also told me it would take a while as they have to pull my service records to verify i am and where i had served.
i am sure that any one from the RBL that is a case worker has to keep an open mind did you report him for his comments i hope for your sake and any one else who see"s him he has been retrained or batter still removed from the position.

I'm one of the Vietanm vets, 2/5, 1st Marine Division, 1967. Spent most of my time in the mountains near Laos, about 25 miles southwest of DaNang. That's about all the information I provide regarding where I was and what I did. The rest doesn't mater cause my focus is on how to deal with post traumatic stress, not what caused it.

Did I read somewhere above where someone refered to PTSD as mental illness? Hell, I don't even like the D cause it's not a disorder. Reactions to combat that include tension, hypervigalence, anxiety, rage and on and on........... are NORMAL REACTIONS to extreme conditions. Problem is normal reactions cause big problems.

The complexity of dealing with those problems is what this site is all about. And, as mention there is no cure because we're not sick, we've been wounded.

Within the Lippe Branch we both sit on the committee, my Misses is Treasurer and I am Entertainments, I am also a long time friend (87 till present) of the Chairman (who is also our Welfare Officer) who was also present at the time :D.

So his comment was duely noted and he got spoken to officialy. Tosser is still in his position but a lot of people no longer like him because of his attitude.

Welcome to the forum. I will say this: PTSD is not, as Jimmy pointed out, a phenomena. It is a mental condition brought on by extreme stress. That stress can be a tornado killing your family, a bad car accident, or combat duty served inside or outside the wire. Several guys in my group have PTSD from working morturary affairs throughout the length of OIF and OEF...sure, they also got their share of IDF attacks, but what f*cked them up was packing so many bodies in ice to send home. PTSD is a beast that never goes away and is as real as it gets.

PTSD, is still PTSD. If you call it something else it's still PTSD. Not going to go away even if you call it a phenomenon. Definition to follow.

So the traumatic event that changed the person was not an Unusual Occurrence when compared to normal every day life? And Seeing brothers blown or shot to shit is not a Significant Occurrence?

OK, all I'm saying is E is saying that PTSD is a phenomenon. I think you've paraphrased that definition. So, let's break it down.

A person getting shot or wounded in combat isn't an Unusual Occurrence.It happens all the time. There's nothing normal about combat. The action of someone being shot, wounded or killed is significant but not in the context of a phenomenon. It occurs constantly. Part of what a phenomenon is is that it doesn't happen all the time as soldiers getting wounded does. A meteor streaking across the sky is a phenomenon, it doesn't usually happen or happen often. Please don't give me a laundry list of other phenoms that occur constantly.

I'm making a point of how it's trying to be used in reference to PTSD. Which is a mental condition caused by constant and excessive trauma. In this context I believe it's incorrect. Don't want to make it a pissing contest. If you see it differently OK. I just don't.

I just don't like when people change the words of something because it makes them feel better. If you have a heart attack that's what it is. If you call it your tick tick's boo boo it just doesn't change what it is. PTSD is a mental condition.Calling it something else doesn't change that. That's my only point. I'm not going to pick anything else apart in any other way to make it seem like something else.

This thread seems to have touched a lot of nerves on a lot of us. Funny how it seems we are fine with most posts and then wham one takes off.
I think E is testing the waters a bit saying what he has. To gauge our reactions. I am not sure if he is stating a belief or just making a statement.
It can provoke a lot of thought when we get a new member that kicks the can and challenges us and what we are comfortable with. I don't agree with a lot of what he has said so far but he is entitled to have a view that is different. If we all agreed on everything this would be a VERY boring site.

Southern Irish are Micks, unless you had an upbringing like mine making them Taigs or Fenians.
I mean in the UK the large portion of the population have fags and will not think twice about sucking on one, can`t see one of our brothers over the pond Sucking a Fag.

What I am getting at is that a name is name, and nothing else. What makes a name bad is our own interpretation of what it means. But to have a Barney on here about name`s, come on we are not in the school playground ffs.
