Keep your eye on this development, especially if you travel. If this kitty gets out of the bag it could go ugly early.

EBOLA CONTAINMENT LOST -- INFECTION RATE UP 15% IN 24 HOURS; OUTBREAK ARRIVES IN PISA, ITALY!

Link Removed

Small part of the story;

According to the World Health Organization, this strain of Ebola is entirely new and although it is close to the Zaire strain, it is different, thus accounting for false-negative test results . . . . . for weeks!

Those false-negative results meant people who were actually infected with Ebola, were returned to their families and neighborhoods to recover from what they believed was the Flu or a case of food poisoning, only to spread the Ebola further. The result has been a complete loss of containment of this Ebola outbreak. With the likely arrival of Ebola in Pisa, Italy, the European continent is now at severe risk.

Edit to add:

This is one of the things that Deane (wife) and I were concerned about when she was a filght attendant flying for UAL. All it would take is one person flying in to the US from Italy, or else where and get on her plane or some other airline or other transportation.......Not good.....

Oh shit....

This is one of the apocalypse diseases (not a religious statement, just a common sense statement). I'm not one to run around saying the sky is falling, but people need to keep an eye on this one. Be prepared - I'm a mild doomsday prepper, mostly food.

Excerpts from Wikipedia:

The disease has a high rate of death possibly up to 90% (of those infected)

Symptoms start 2 days to 3 weeks after contacting the virus (leaving infected people up to 3 weeks to travel and spread the disease).

Men who survive may be able to transmit the disease sexually for nearly 2 months.

There is no specific treatment for the virus (except rehydration therapy)

Human-to-human transmission occurs via direct contact with blood or bodily fluids from an infected person

Aerosol transmission has not been observed during natural EVD outbreaks (sneeze and cough)

one of the deadliest known viruses affecting humans

-----------

As stated in the OP, this is a new strain, and with it, many unknowns.

The transportation is the key. If it is confirmed to be in any country, they have to stop ALL forms of movement. Trains, cars, busses, planes, ships EVERYTHING.
If you stop the transportation, this bug dies out pretty fast. People just have to be willing to stay at home and not mingle. Hard in modern society but if it was my life or making a meeting for work, I think the meeting could wait.

This is not as terrifying as it would initially seem. Ebola is not an airborne virus. It is spread through contact fluids--blood, sweat, saliva, urine, feces, semen, etc. It is actually easier to contain than you would think and even if it does make its way into Europe an/or the States, just keep to yourself and you won't contract it.

There are cultural reasons for why the virus becomes such a huge pandemic when it crops up in Africa, but it won't make it too far in a First World country. Raperaperape, polygamy, funeral practices involve touching the deceased, bushmeat, terrible hygiene, they don't have gloves or proper gowns in medical facilities over half the time. I won't get into it further.

Not to make light of those deceased, the stats aren't that bad. A few hundred in a country of millions. Odds are there are more starving to death than from this illness. And concur with least likely as to occur in civilized nations.
