The Korean War (as its called in the US) has never been over. There is an armistice in place, a cease fire if you will, bu no peace treaty. We are technically at war with North Korea now, and have been for decades.
Obama, Bush, Clinton, please come back and FIX this f*cking mess!!!! God, I wish that could happen!!!!!
I'm going to push back a little on this. I mean, I get it. I believe the Trump administration is a dangerous mess. But taking it so far as to ask term limited past presidents to return to power is not warranted, or useful. In regards to North Korea, every past president since the Korean War had the chance to intervene with North Korea in a greater way. They all did what they thought best and here we are. This situation didn't start with Trump coming on the scene, and even if Clinton was in office, it would likely be where it is now. North Korea has been building to this point for decades. It's no surprise. Bush called North Korea Iran and Iraq the "Axis of Evil" and Obama was trying to deal with North Korea and Iran as threats to the US and world peace too.
Trump is stupid to say a few of the things he has said, but Tillerson and others around him are approaching it well, so far. They are tampering down the things Trump is saying - almost like good cop, bad cop, good cop. And asking for past presidents to come back and do something to fix this is asking for a suspension of the constitution. A better option is to ask our current representatives to be involved and help supports measured response to the threats North Korea is making.
@scout86 I've been mulling over this myself. Though I wonder if it may be necessary for North Korea to strike first.
There's no way their allies could ever possibly condone, or attempt to intervene against a US military action after something like that, right?
North Korea's allies include Iran. Iran wants the US eliminated as much as North Korea. China is sort of a frienemy of North Korea. North Korea already has troops in Syria fighting against the US. If North Korea was to strike first, I do believe Iran and a few other nations would follow them to strike the US as well. It would not be just US plus US allies against North Korea.
What would allies of the US do? I don't know. I don't think we have their backing as solidly in the past. Most Americans don't understand how much we are hated. And it's not for the freedom of the US.... but I do think if the US is hit first, we will be in a much stronger position to get support from allies.
I hope the US does not strike first, because we seem to always strike first and it doesn't seem to work out well.
If North Korea uses a nuke on the US first, the US will strike back; and millions will die in hours. Many of them will be in Seoul. The economy would completely destabilize and I'm pretty sure we would be looking at a hot WW3.
If the US strikes first, it will be because the IS is so scared of that cost of North Korea hitting first. If the US strikes first, North Korea will strike back, and...
Both scenarios are terrible.
The one diplomatic option that we really have on the table is to try to convince China to do more to intervene. To his credit, Trump explored that route. To his shame, he's kind to already given up on it. Which it foolish and horrible. I hope and imagine that those around him are still pushing that option heavily.
