Good afternoon :) or whatever it is for you.

I've had plans to clean out my room at home for some time, and I'm slowly getting to the phase where I could make it a real room.

Unfortunately, I have never really seen a real bedroom before. My father kept all rooms piling with junk, and these days all the other rooms are worse than ever. The best looking room is my twin brother's, though even still there is just a bit too much stuff in there.

I have lived with my insane ex before, but I'm not sure if her bedroom ever quite counted. She had to have lightweight stuff because her mom would inevitably cause them to have to move within the year (rough childhood for her).

I have seen many, many dorm rooms, but I have been told by friends that dorm rooms are different from bedrooms.

I found a site that has pictures of bedrooms, and I was wondering, do these look like real bedrooms to you?

https://www.quora.com/What-does-your-room-look-like-2

How do they compare to yours? Can you describe yours? (No need to post any pictures if you can't/aren't comfortable.)

(In a bitI'll re-login from my phone in order to post a few pictures of a dorm room I'm currently staying in.)

Edit to add: I think I'm mainly confused about furniture and rugs? I keep looking for some, seeing ones I definitely can't afford, and then ones that are kind of low quality. I have a desk now although I haven't put it together yet. But I tried figuring out storage bed frames (ones with drawers) and tried to figure out what a headboard is and if it makes a bed nicer...?

Those are some fancy rooms in those pictures. Mine looks like someone went to art school and then blew up while holding all their supplies. My bedroom is probably not an ideal bedroom. Mattress on the floor and a desk. I have a little bookshelf that I propped a mirror on top of that I ripped out of a bathroom in an abandoned house. I would definitely recommend not doing that. Goodwill and Savers are great for cheap stuff like that! Use amps and stereo speakers as tables :wacky: Tons of stuff I have to donate everywhere.. not great at the moment haha.

What colors or scents make you feel comfortable? Or textures, if you think about that too. There are some fairly cheap square frame shelf things you can assemble yourself, and use them as shelves or get boxy drawer things to store stuff in on them. I guess I would suggest just getting the essentials (a bed, sounds like you have a desk, maybe a bedside table) and then go to town with little comforting items you may have, I like to put posters and pictures and records on my walls too. It's your safe space :)

I am a huge fan of IKEA's Kallax cube-shelved bookcase series. I turned a 5x5 into my library, 2 4x2's into my entertainment center, and one 4x2 as a catchall beside my bed. I also have a 2x2 in my closet for boxes of clothes. IKEA also has some really nice bed frames with drawers, although they can be a little pricey. I tend to be pretty OCD, so organization and good flow is key for me. I can't STAND clutter! I also use those metal shelving units you find at Walmart for storing some things in. Overall, my bedroom is still too cluttered and multi-purposed to be a real "bedroom" but its the best I can do right now. These cube-style bookcases can also be found at Walmart and are about the same price, but I think the IKEA ones are just a bit sturdier and better-made.

So, my bedroom has my "bed", the dogs' twin mattress on the floor beside my bed, my "entertainment center" which holds all my movies, video games, DVD player, and Desktop computer hooked up to a 43" TV. My big bookcase on another wall holds my books (which are vital to my sanity!). I have a Metal shelf unit holding various toys, action figures, martial arts weapons, and blankets. There is another small bookcase that holds all my card and board games, puzzles, coloring books, and art supplies. Then my very small closet holds my clothes, gun safe, ammo cans, and Breyer horse collection. Finally, my catchall bookcase has my essential oil supplies, medications, and various other things I couldn't find places for. There is no clutter on the floor, everything has its place, and there is good movement in my small room, but its so mentally stimulating due to all the "stuff" I don't really sleep very well.

My ideal bedroom would be JUST a bed (queen size would be best), maybe a small bedside table for ONE book and a glass of water, and some nice Japanese art on the wall. Perhaps a small altar in front of a window that holds my incense, a statue, some crystals, and my meditation cushion on the floor in front of the altar. A walk-in closet would be perfect!

Your bedroom can look however you want it to look. a bedroom can look like dorm room. some people do not use "dressers" or chests for clothing. They only use the closet with hangers and then some shelves to put folded clothing on and baskets for the shelves for socks/undies, etc. Some use chest of drawers or dressers. It really depends on the shape the bedroom and the size. too much funiture or furniture that is large in a small room does not feel comfortable. You will need space on the floor to dress, walk around, etc. That's why some only use the closet or the space under their bed for clothing storage. Some people use platform beds, or just put the box spring and mattress on the floor. Others like a really high bed on a frame that you need to use a step to get up into. The benefit of a frame and high frame is to use under bed storage. A headboard definitely makes the room look better, depending on it's size compared to the size of the room. A foot board is not really needed, and it can make a bed look better though. Window blinds/curtains/coverings, bedstand I think are necessities. For my dresser I actually have an ancient dining room sideboard that I use, and the thing is mammoth-sized. I thought it was cool with these little locks on each drawer. My room is very large with a high ceiling so it can handle this enormous piece of funiture with it's attached huge mirror. I hope you have fun putting your room together. look at a bunch of images of bedrooms; so many different styles and themes from around the world. you don't need a lot of money to make a pleasant bedroom. Have fun with it. Putting a room together is an artform! enjoy it!

I don't know if anywhere around you has it, but in my area there are online "yard sales" that sell furniture and other things cheap on facebook! I was looking for moving out but I can't afford that anymore.

My room has a bed with a frame, one nightstand with three drawers, a desk, a printer table, two bookshelves, and a dresser with a mirror. All the furniture is light brown. I'm very privileged though, and my room is big. I just redid it actually in peach colors, which makes me happier than the grey that was in my room. I have a big window/sliding glass door that faces the bed and looks out onto a river.

For half of my life I lived in a 5 foot ceiling room with no windows that was supposed to be used as a storage closet but my brother and I lived in it until he was a teenager and then it was my room. I thought it was super big at the time, but it barely fit a futon and a dresser. There were nice closets though, and I liked having my own space when my brother left.

In my first apartment after college, I had a futon bed, simple dresser and cool lamp in my bedroom. I actually, at one point, moved my futon into the living room where my tv was because “I could.” Nowadays in married land, we have a king sized bed on a frame and two end tables a vanity and dresser. All hand me down furniture (but nice). Target has nice rugs that don’t cost too much. Walmart as well.

Decide what appeals to you: modern, mid century modern, rustic farmhouse, rustic Italian, French country, Victorian, bohemian, afar East, Near East.
You can find furniture online like someone said. I’ve found lots of perfectly good things sitting on the curb in wealthy towns waiting for the trash truck. I’ve gone to auctions and gotten great antiques for little money. I downsized to a small condo at the beach, so I bought a white platform bed, nightstand, and dresser. I have a bookcase which I need to paint white plus two identical storage units that fit perfectly under the windows. I also have a cool oval mirror that hangs from a leather strap. I accesorize with art, I have an altar to Buddha with offering bowls and candles. I collect old pottery pots, gave most of them to my daughter as well I gave her all my antiques. My art is ocean inspired and I got a few large paintings instead of many small ones. I have high ceilings. I painted the walls Shaker beige and my bedding is white and beige. I have lots of pillows. I have two Shaker peg slabs that I hang things I’m too lazy to put where they belong. I have a basket with a lid to hide my ironing. And a jewelry organizer on the wall.
Knowing me I will change the wall color in a year. I will get bored with my art and chage that too.
I spend a lot of my time in my bedroom because it’s private and my neighbors can’t see in to it. And I take a nap every day.
Do you like Pinterest? You can get tons of inspiration there. Your accessories will reflect you’re inner world, whereas the furniture can be basic. Your bedding is another way to comfort yourself. Have fun!!

Good afternoon :) or whatever it is for you.

I've had plans to clean out my room at home for some tim...

Here's my take on the bedroom ideas. Is your bedroom supposed to be functional? In other words, do you spend lots of time in bed? The bedroom for me had to be functional, but look like one when company came. First I got a new bed, a new TV, and everything else was from the thrift store or Restore. I'm finding that furnishings can be cheap and fun to buy...if you take time and look around. If you are creative, you can repurpose inexpensive furniture and make it your own....then you will have a sense of accomplishment....and it will look like you. If you draw, paint or photograph, you can make your own images. If you are crafty, crochet or quilt something for your bed. If you like colors, use those that make you feel good inside....personally, I like blues and greens.

I asked myself, what do I want it to look like, not what should it look like. When I ask myself that question, I seem to be more satisfied with the results. It is your room...you are the only one that has to be satisfied with it. I got the fairy dolls out and found a chair at the Restore to put them in. I am putting photos I took that make me proud of my accomplishments up ….those that give me a nice feeling. I put the big TV in my room, so when I do watch it, it is like an event. I use the computer a lot and print, so I have a wifi printer next to the bed...I don't have to get up. I have a cat, and they give me comfort....so they HAD to have a catpan….or no kitties in the bedroom.

And so forth.....so, you can create your bedroom the way you want (forget what bedrooms are supposed to look like)....satisfy all of you by doing what feels good, makes you happy (you sleep in it right?) and I can't stress, let it be functional as well as fun. If you paint it polka dots, that is totally cool....and if you don't like it....get more paint! I think the bedroom is the one room in the house that should reflect who we are and meet our needs. My bedroom is my safety place....my comfy place.....my retreat....it is organized so I can function, and kinda messy sometimes and not others, but who cares, I can close the door....other people don't need to come in my bedroom-well at least not at this stage in the game.............. It is also a work in progress....and that's okay....because we are always changing...right?
